Catherine Smith Obituary

Catherine Torisky Smith departed this life after enjoying a very long and fruitful journey. A true Pittsburgh girl, she grew up on the South Side during the Depression years, earned a full academic scholarship to Vincentian Academy High School, trained to be a registered nurse at St. Joseph School of Nursing, and served her country as a nurse in the Navy, stateside, during the Korean War years. Married for 67 years to her beloved husband, Edmond B. Smith, Jr., and raising four rambunctious children, Catherine managed to balance family life with continuing her nursing career until her retirement in 1988. As early members of the Upper St. Clair community, the Smiths resided there until retirement in Florida. Catherine was the beloved daughter of William and Anna (Dugas) Torisky, the loving wife of Edmond Smith, and the cherished mother of Deborah Wheeler (Gary), Carole Stewart (Scott), Marianne Ferris (Charles), and William Smith (Ann). The joy of her life was her grandchildren, Lauren and Jon Wheeler (Lora), Jessica Smith (Bill Dick), Taylor Christman, Amanda Foner-DelaCruz (Stephen), Benjamin (Rachel) and Jeremy Ferris, and Charles Foner; and, most importantly, her great-granddaughters, Hazel Foner-DelaCruz and Evelyn Smith-Dick. Services will be held at the convenience of her family. Contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore, PA.
