Conrad Gates Obituary

Conrad J. Gates, 71, of Greensburg, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. Born July 16, 1931, in Buffalo, N.Y., he was a son of the late Homer and Emily Christine Machemer Gates. He was a member of St. Bruno Church, South Greensburg, and had served in the U.S. Army. Conrad graduated from Cornell University and Buffalo University School of Law with a Juris Doctor degree. He was professor emeritus in the graduate department, teaching industrial relations at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He was admitted to practice in the state courts of New York and Pennsylvania and in the Federal District Court of the United States. He also had a private practice in Monroeville. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association, Westmoreland County Bar Association, Industrial Relations Research Association (Western Pa. chapter), Association of Pa. State College and University Faculties and the Pittsburgh Personnel Association. Conrad was also a former department chair of business administration for St. Vincent College and was an arbitrator. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Stadlinger. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Rosemary Dallap Gates; a son, Kurt Gates and his wife, Veldah, of San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Jill and husband, Dr. James Abraham, of Greensburg and Christine Burke and husband, Sean, of South Riding, Va.; six grandchildren, Chad, Sara and Abigail Gates, Matthew and Thomas Abraham and Connor Burke; and a sister, Ellen Jane Gates of Buffalo, N.Y. Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate the life of Conrad in the CLEMENT L. PANTALONE FUNERAL HOME INC., 409 W. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg, 724-837-0020, Wednesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Prayers will be held in the funeral home Thursday at 12:45 p.m., followed by a funeral Mass at 1:15 p.m. in St. Bruno Church, South Greensburg, with Father Blane Resko, O.S.B., as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Clair Cemetery, Greensburg. A scholarship fund will be established in Conrad Gates' memory at IUP.
