Edwin Hogan Obituary

Edwin R. Hogan, 89, of West Newton, died Sunday, April 1, 2018. He was born Jan. 31, 1929, in Sutersville, a son of the late David and Mary (Blobner) Hogan. Ed was a 1947 graduate of West Newton High School and a 1951 graduate of Slippery Rock State College. He was a four-year Navy veteran aboard the carrier USS Wright. After leaving the Navy, he taught physical education and health at Rostraver High School from 1955 to 1962 and served as the head football coach from 1957 to 1962. His 1962 team was a co-champion of the WPIAL Class A Title with an undefeated record. He continued his teaching and coaching career at Mt. Pleasant High School from 1964 to 1966. While at Mt. Pleasant High School, he was one of the founding fathers of the Mt. Pleasant Youth Football league, which is still in existence today. In 1966, Ed went to work for the Jones Brewing Co. and was named president in 1986. He was also a managing partner with the McClure-Johnston Co. in Braddock. Ed served on numerous boards, including the board of trustees of Westmoreland County Community College for 23 years, where he also served as board chairman, and in 2006 he was given the honor of trustee emeritus. He served on the boards of the Westmoreland County Community College Foundation, Yough High School, where he also served as board president, Jeannette Hospital, Westmoreland County AAA, and West Newton Recreation Board. Ed was a member of VFW Post 7812, West Newton, where he had been junior vice commander, American Legion Post 401, West Newton, the Westmoreland County Coaches Association, and Holy Family Church, West Newton, and its Holy Name Society. In 2000, he was elected into the Belle Vernon High School Hall of Fame. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Priscilla (King) Hogan; sons, Timothy (Kathleen) Hogan and Michael (Roberta) Hogan, both of Greensburg; a daughter-in-law, Marianne Hogan, of Smithton; seven grandchildren, Julie (Michael) Zappone, Emily (Gregory) Erceg, Rory (Laura) Hogan, and Caitlyn, Brenna, Jennifer, and Matthew Hogan; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Edwin P. Hogan, DMD, on March 17, 2018; and 12 brothers and sisters. The family would like to thank Erik and Susan Berggren, Shirley Budd, and Heartland Hospice workers Melanie and Lori for the excellent care they gave to Ed.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the J. WILLIAM McCAULEY JR. FUNERAL HOME, 901 Vine St., West Newton. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Holy Family Church. Interment will follow in West Newton Cemetery.
