Georganna Cavanaugh Obituary

Georganna (Miedel) Cavanaugh, 78, of Latrobe, passed away Monday, Oct. 6, 2025, at her home. Born Aug. 19, 1947, in Latrobe, she was the daughter of the late William and Dorothy R. (Clark) Miedel. Georganna graduated from Greensburg Central Catholic High School and then attended the Westmoreland Hospital School of Nursing. Prior to her retirement, she was a devoted registered nurse at Excela Health Latrobe Hospital. Georganna was an active member of St. John the Evangelist Church in Latrobe and its Rosary Altar Christian Mothers. She sang in the funeral choir, spent many hours volunteering at church craft shows and fundraisers, and tended to Mary's Garden. An avid pickleball player in both Pennsylvania and Arizona, she also enjoyed golfing, especially in the SILU League at Norvelt Golf Club. Throughout the years, she loved traveling and cherished trips to Sunset Beach, NC, as well as Turks and Caicos, where she enjoyed long walks on the beaches. Her family was most important to her, and she was their biggest cheerleader, always attending and supporting her children's and grandchildren's sporting events. Georganna is survived by her husband of 57 years, Terry E. Cavanaugh, of Latrobe; two sons, Brian P. Cavanaugh and his wife, Sherri, of Delmont, and David M. Cavanaugh and his wife, JoAnn, of San Diego, CA; four grandchildren, Patrick Cavanaugh, William Cavanaugh (Fah), Elizabeth Cavanaugh, and Matthew Cavanaugh; a great-granddaughter, Joanna Marie Cavanaugh; two brothers, Robert Miedel and his wife, Peggy, of Somers Point, NJ, and Clark Miedel of Latrobe; and two sisters, Becky Kerestes and her husband, Jim, of Litchfield Park, AZ, and Debbie Penrose and her husband, Terry, of Latrobe. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Excela Hospice for the kind and compassionate care they provided. Family and friends will be received from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, 2025, at LOPATICH-BRINKER FUNERAL HOME LLC, 601 Weldon St., Latrobe. Members of the St. John Rosary Altar Christian Mothers will recite the Rosary at noon Sunday, Oct. 12, 2025, in the funeral home. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 13, 2025, at St. John the Evangelist Church, Latrobe, with the Rev. John Foriska as celebrant. Entombment will follow in the Mary, Mother of Mercy Mausoleum at St. Vincent Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Georganna would have liked memorial contributions to be made to support Mary's Garden at the church. Memorial contributions may be sent to St. John the Evangelist Church, 306 St. John Drive, Latrobe, PA 15650, marked "For Mary's Garden," or use the envelopes provided at the funeral home.
