Howard Leukhardt Obituary

Howard Alan Leukhardt Jr., passed away Wednesday, May 3, 2023, in Corona, Calif. He was born Aug. 18, 1935, in Pittsburgh, to Sara Host Leukhardt and Howard Alan Leukhardt Sr., and grew up in North Irwin. Howard attended North Huntingdon High School (Norwin), Westminster College, and later, Robert Morris University. He worked as a systems analyst, then he and his wife co-owned a successful GNC franchise. In high school, Howard met the love of his life, Joan Carosso, at Blue Dell Pool. They were married for 67 years, raising two children, Jill (Marty Lidston) Leukhardt and H. Alan (Cynthia) Leukhardt III. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Claire Lidston and Howard Alan Leukhardt IV; his sister, Carole Rorabaugh, and brother, Jack (Marilyn) Leukhardt; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his older sister, Jane Carrig. Most important to Howard were family, friends and community - and competing at everything. He strongly supported and celebrated the advanced education of his wife, children and grandchildren. He was dedicated to his children's sports activities, frequently driving long distances to cheer for them. He and his wife were devoted to lifelong relationships with friends from childhood and high school. He served his community as an elected member and later president of the Norwin School Board and as an active member of the Greater Norwin Jaycees. He coached boys' sports, drawing on his experience playing at Norwin and with neighborhood friends. Howard was inducted into the Norwin Athletic Hall of Fame, recognizing his outstanding performance in basketball, football and baseball. He was also a member of the Shidle Masonic Lodge No. 601. He became a duplicate bridge life master, enjoyed cribbage with his children and grandchildren, and played and watched Jeopardy with his family. He took pride in having visited 48 states, aspiring to reach Nebraska and North Dakota. He was a lifelong Steelers and Pirates fan, recently adding the Dodgers and Chiefs to his favorites. Howard's life was celebrated Friday, May 12, at his home in Corona, Calif. A second memorial will be celebrated from noon to 4 p.m. Father's Day, Sunday, June 18, at Oak Hollow Park Locust Pavilion, North Huntingdon. The family welcomes donations to Westmoreland County Historical Society as an expression of sympathy in lieu of flowers.

Our sympathy to Howard's family from growing up in "North Irwin" days. "Luke" was a good friend.

Remembering all of the good times we had with the Leukhardt family as high-school friends. Mr. Leukhardt was always in tune with us young adults. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.
