Kathryn Izzo Obituary

Kathryn C. "Kitty" Izzo, of Murrysville, wife, mother, grandmother, clubwoman, and nurse, passed away peacefully at William Penn Care Center, Penn Township, on Monday, Nov. 8, 2010. The mother of four and grandmother of 10 was born in Philadelphia, then moved to Pittsburgh shortly thereafter with her parents. She was 76. Kitty was a 1952 graduate of Ursuline Academy. In 1955, after graduating from St. Margaret Hospital School of Nursing, she married Lt. Carl P. Izzo, who was on active duty with the Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Their first child, Carl P. Izzo Jr., was born at the base hospital. The family returned to the Pittsburgh area in 1957, where her husband was employed as a scientist at PPG Industries Research Labs and later at Westinghouse Research Labs. Kitty's daughters, Cynthia, Sandra and Linda, were born in Pittsburgh. For several years, Kitty was a member of the Rosedale Junior Women's Club, becoming its president in 1968. The club was famous for its charitable and community activities which she enjoyed. Later she became the junior director of the Allegheny County Women's Clubs. She was also active in the PTA and Girl Scouts. In 1972, when her children were entering college, she decided to get a job to help defray the expenses. With her RN license in hand she went job hunting and was immediately hired by Montefiore Hospital to work as a medical/surgical nurse. After three years, she was recruited by Magee-Womens Hospital to work in its nursery, where she spent 10 years in the nursery with the mothers and their new babies. She really loved that job. After leaving the nursing profession, Kitty pursued her hobbies, knitting, gourmet cooking and collecting knitting and cook books. Her home in Murrysville had a library filled with these books from all over the world. In addition to her husband, Carl P. Izzo Sr., she is survived by her daughters, Cynthia Atterbury and husband, Doug, of Johnstown, Sandra Rudisill and husband, Jim, of Monroeville, and Linda DeFrancesco and husband, Bobby, of Greensburg; and her grandchildren, Emily, Katie and Carl P. Izzo III, Margaret, Christina and Elizabeth Atterbury, James Jr. and Jessica Rudisill, and Robert and Nicholas DeFrancesco. She was preceded in death by her parents, John C. Campbell Sr. and Dorathy R. Campbell; a brother, John C. Campbell Jr.; and a son, Carl P. Izzo Jr. Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate the life of Kathryn from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the CLEMENT L. PANTALONE FUNERAL HOME INC., 409 W. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg, 724-837-0020. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in Mother of Sorrows Church, Murrysville. Please go directly to the church. Entombment will follow in Greensburg Catholic Cemetery Mausoleum.
