Kenneth Mitchell Obituary

Kenneth M. Mitchell, minister, teacher, loyal brother, loving son, uncle and friend, sadly passed away Monday, Aug. 1, 2022, at a senior living facility, The Sheridan at Bethel Park. He died as a result of late-stage dementia at the age of 74. A wise man once stated, "if you must choose, take a good name rather than great riches; for to be held in loving esteem is better than silver and gold." Proverbs 22:1 The Living Bible. Ken chose a good name rather than riches and in doing so was held in loving esteem by many in the community. Ken received a master's degree in education from the University of Pittsburgh. He taught at McKeesport Senior High School for four decades and was loved by his students, students' parents and fellow teachers. In a 2004 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette survey, Ken received several nominations for the top educators who made a difference in Western Pennsylvania. He loved teaching - making a difference. He especially enjoyed teaching the Bible as a minister of Jehovah's Witnesses. Ken firmly believed that following Bible principles could improve the life of anyone who wished to apply them. He felt that the application of Bible principles could draw families together, make people more honest, make better husbands and fathers, better wives and mothers, better children, better employees. Additionally, whenever a loved one died, Ken was comforted by the Bible's resurrection hope expressed in Acts 24:15. Ken looked forward to being reunited with mother, father, brothers and friends in a restored environment, a paradise earth free from sickness and death. Ken enjoyed playing basketball, listening to music, playing name that tune (50's 60's and 70's songs) with family, reading and volunteering and helping others. He was known for his creative imagination, compassionate spirit and beautiful smile. Ken is survived by brothers, William Mitchell, of Novato, Calif., Paul Mitchell, of Pittsburgh, sister and brother-in-law, Linda Williams and Callie Williams, of Pittsburgh; nieces, Kristen Porter, husband Jason Porter, of Wallkill, N.Y., and Andrea Mitchell, of Novato, Calif.; cousins, June Washington and husband, Cyrus Washington, of Columbus, Ga., Jerry Elkins and wife, Beverly Elkins, of Denver, Colo., and Sandra and Cheryl Elkins, of White Oak. He was preceded in death by his father, William, and mother, Lorraine, brothers, Leonard and Edward, and sister-in-law, Rosalind Mitchell. Arrangements are by the GILBERT FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY INC., 1638 Lincoln Way, White Oak, PA 15131, 412-672-6322, Troy J. Gilbert, director. There will be no services at this time. A celebration of life will be held via Zoom at a later date. Please check back for a Zoom link once a date has been decided. The family would like to thank The Sheridan at Bethel Park for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be directed to donate.jw.org. Ken was the tour guide for my non-believing mother-in-law when we took her to the assembly hall in Coraopolis. She was very impressed with him. She asked me if he was a teacher. She had a masters degree in education. She recognized his quality.

Wanted to first extend my condolences to the Mitchell Family. I remember I first attended Swissvale and Ken was always welcoming. I appreciated how he conducted meetings, and you could tell he was a natural teacher because he would ask questions to make you think. Another thing Ken would love to talk about is sports especially when it came to his Pitt Panthers....one time we were driving and he saw a group of Pitt students who were doing volunteer work in Braddock and pulled over just to talk to them.
Ken will be greatly missed. Looking forward to the time we will see him again

I remember his smile, even 50+ years on. Ken was a fine person, and the world is a much sadder place without him. Rest well, Kenny.

Within a few minutes of first meeting Mr. Ken through my friendship with Linda, he casually shared his thoughts on a matter and had the new folks in the small group saying, "I never thought about it like that before..." We only met face-to-face less than a handful of times after that and his genuine, kind, honest heart, quick wit and sense of humor are what I remember the most. I look forward to the time when God's Kingdom government is ruling over this earth and the promised earthly resurrection is in full swing. Seeing and hearing Ken share his thoughts will be a treat. Until then, I know you will miss him every day. I know I will.

Paul (and others) thank you for taking such great loving care of "our" brother. I know Ken will thank you for all that you did for him.

I had the privilege of getting to know Ken through convention work and Hospital Liaison Committee projects for bloodless surgery. During that time our friendship grew and I came to appreciate his many outstanding qualities. He demonstrated kindness while working tirelessly to support and assist others. He reflected in an exemplary manner the wonderful attributes of our Heavenly Father Jehovah.

I was fortunate enough to have Ken Mitchell as a teacher twice in high school, once as a sophomore and again as a senior. As many others have noted, he had a unique ability to see students as people worthy of his time and ideas. He never was a "lecturer" but a true communicator and inspiration. He was the first teacher I ever had who encouraged and challenged his students to think, to inquire, to test their ideas of who they wanted to be and what they wanted from their lives. I was lucky enough later in life to get to spend some time with him and reflect on those days...and thank him. He was one in a million. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew him. It is certainly so for me.

Ken was a true friend and mentor. Without question one of the finest individuals I ever had the privilege of knowing. I cherish the memories of working closely together at conventions in Wheeling, Pittsburgh and Cleveland. His Christlike humility, love, kindness and reasonable approach impacted so many for the positive. May Jehovah comfort and sustain his dear family and friends.

Kenny and his family lived a block away from us in Versailles Borough, so I remember him well. He was both kind and intelligent. One year I was at a MSHS football game and he came over and we talked and talked. He had an innate talent for making someone feel comfortable. My condolences to his family and friends.

I have known Ken since our high school days. He was always such a happy person and very outgoing. As years past, he went on to his true calling, a teacher. Ken touched my life and both of my children’s lives. He would come pick up my son to play whatever kind of ball they were playing that night. He played a very important part in mine and many other’s children teaching them things not in a school book; one of which was the meaning of being a true and everlasting friend. Those of us that knew “Kenny” were really blessed to have him in our lives. I will always be thankful to him for taking my son under his wings and being there for him when he needed a friend. Thank you Kenny for being the special man you were. Your character and love of kids will live on for many years to come. I will miss seeing you in Giant Eagle.

He was an inspiration and guided many of us through high school. I spent many winter evenings playing basketball alongside him at Auberle, it was always a great time. A few years back I always would run into him at Giant Eagle White Oak, and he would always stop to talk. As I would walk away, I would see him talking to several others before he left the store. It is a testament to the lives he touched. Rest In Peace my dear friend! You have fulfilled your destiny.

Like many other students, Mr. Mitchell was my favorite teacher. He made me feel seen in a way few other adults did. He wrote my college recommendation letters, and I was so proud of the words he wrote about me, that I would reread the letter any time I wasn´t feeling confident. I hope he knew how much we all loved him.

Sincere condolences to all that knew and loved Ken "Mitch" Mitchell. He was indeed a special person that did so much for me in my high school and early adulthood life. I wouldn´t be the person I am today if I didn´t know Mitch. There are so many great stories I could share. He got a lot of us off of the streets and into a gym for one. Taught us valuable life lessons and was there at several times of my life that I needed him. REST IN PEACE MY SPECIAL FRIEND. God Bless.

I would like to extend our most sincere sympathy and condolences to the Mitchell and Elkins families on behalf of my mother and me. Kenny was of course a great teacher and friend to many, and I know my late father held him in great esteem. There's a great void left in many places by his passing, and yet he built so much that lives on in the community and in the hearts of minds of all he touched.
