Born May 2, 1918, in Leechburg, he was a lifelong resident of Armstrong County. A self-employed strip miner, he was known locally and nationally as a longtime race-car owner. Mr. Smith was a member of the South Bend United Church of Christ. Survivors include two daughters, Arlene Taylor of Clearwater, Fla., and Mrs. Terry (Sally) Gray of Hueytown, Ala.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas M. Smith; his parents, James E. and Blanche Harmon Smith; and a sister, Margaret Dunmire. Visitation will be private. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the South Bend United Church of Christ with the Rev. Herman Ridley officiating. Burial will be in South Bend Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the South Bend United Church of Christ, South Bend, PA 15686.
