He was born August 6, 1934, in Butler and lived in Apollo for most of his life. A 1952 graduate of Apollo High School, he graduated in 1956 from Allegheny College in Meadville. He served in the Army from 1956 to 1958. For 45 years he was the owner of Apollo Realty, retiring in November of 2000. Mr. Altmire was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Elks and Masonic Lodge, all in Apollo, a member of the board of directors of the Apollo Trust Company, Riverview Cemetery Association and Kiski Valley Enterprises, vice chairman of the Armstrong County Industrial Development Authority, vice president of the Armstrong County Industrial Development Council, founding member and first chairman of the Strongland Chamber of Commerce, member of Apollo Area Business Association, and former board member of the Public Private Board of Armstrong County, Kiski Valley United Way, and the Salvation Army of Vandergrift. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Barbara A. Matson Altmire; his parents, Harold L. and Ruth Scott Altmire of North Apollo; and two brothers, Harold L. (Jonni) Altmire Jr. of Kiski Township and Gerald D. (Denise) Altmire of Elderton. Also surviving are nine nephews and nieces. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the CURRAN-SHAFFER FUNERAL HOME INC., 100 Owens View Drive, Apollo. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Apollo, with the Rev. Charles Horn officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Apollo.
