James Curry Obituary

James A. Curry, 81, of Greensburg, beloved husband and father, passed away Friday, Aug. 30, 2024. He was born July 7, 1943, in Greensburg, a son of the late Joseph and Mary (Walls) Curry. Jim was a graduate of the Greensburg High School class of 1961. Shortly after graduating, Jim enlisted in the United States Navy and became a radioman on the USS Long Beach and the USS Dewey. He remained a proud Navy veteran throughout his lifetime. He continued his education at the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, which began his distinguished career as a member of the Pennsylvania State Police, with most of his time of twenty-eight years being spent with Troop A Greensburg. Jim had a passion for Pennsylvania history, which aided him greatly with his metal-detecting interest. He also appreciated the outdoors, especially boating and fishing. Jim communicated with people worldwide with his shortwave radio equipment. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by several siblings. Jim is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Hyatt-Curry; and their daughter, Hayley Renee Curry and her husband, Fabio Leonardi, and their three children. He is also survived by a son, Jeffrey Curry (Kathy), and their two children; and a daughter, Jennifer Cook (Randy) and their child. Additionally, he is survived by a sister, Cathy Kotjarapoglus; and numerous nephews and nieces. All services for Jim will be private under the direction of the KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME, INC., Greensburg. His final resting place will be in Westmoreland County Memorial Park. Those who desire may make a memorial contribution in his name to PA State Troopers Association-Troopers Helping Troopers at www. troopershelpingtroopers.org/help/. online condolences are welcome at www.kepplegraft.com.

I was lucky to get to know Jim and Shirley through my husband Denny Ellis. Jim and Denny worked at the Greensburg State Police barracks together for many years. We became good friends and spent some quality time together. You have my sincere condolences. Always, Helen

Jim;s life of service preceded USN and PSP. In early Cold War days when radar coverage was limited, Jim was in the Ground Observer Corps, ensuring that no enemy aircraft could elude our air defenses. Jim was effective. No Russian aircraft ever bombed Greensburg. When we were young, we were friends and classmates. I will miss his memory. May your proud and loving memories of Jim live even beyond your years. Please accept my condolences at this sad time.
