Joan Mahanes Obituary

Joan 'Joanie' Kay McConaghie Mahanes, 81, of Greensburg, PA, passed on to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 21, 2024, while surrounded by her loving family. She was born on June 13, 1943, to the late James and Doreen McConaghie, and raised in her hometown of Hazel Park, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. Joan graduated from Hazel Park High School in 1961, serving as class secretary as well as a member of the Vikettes, the first female high school drill team in the USA. In 1966, she graduated with a B.S. in Secondary Education from Wayne State University, where she was a member of the Phi Gamma Nu Professional Business Sorority. Joan went on to teach high school business classes and perform other scholastic administrative duties for a number of years. Also in 1966, Joan married her loving husband of 58 years, Harold Patrick Mahanes Jr. ('Pat'), seven years after first meeting each other at a high school dance. In 1985, Joan, Pat and family relocated to Greensburg in furtherance of Pat's career. During that time, they began their long-time membership of Saint Vincent Basilica Parish in Latrobe, PA. Joan was an amazing wife, mother and grandmother. She was so very proud of her family to whom she always provided the very best of awesome support and loving care throughout each stage of their lives. Joan was a humorous, dear and engaging friend to so very many, including her special Friday night dinner group. She delighted in telling her favorite stories, especially about cherished and memorable times over the years with Pat and family. Joan enjoyed the tv shopping network, frequently buying gifts for family and friends. Joan had a strong belief in fairness and a genuine caring nature, which she further amplified and communicated with warm hugs. She will be sadly missed and dearly remembered by her adoring family and all those whose lives she so warmly enriched. Joan was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Robert and David. She is survived by her husband Pat; daughter, Susan (Jay) Evans of Latrobe; son, Christopher Mahanes of Pleasant Unity; grandchildren, Connor Evans, Jessica Evans and Gracie Mahanes; sisters-in-law, Margaret McConaghie and Joanne McConaghie; and numerous nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 26, 2024, at LOPATICH-BRINKER FUNERAL HOME, LLC, 601 Weldon St., Latrobe. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 27, 2024, at Saint Vincent Basilica, 300 Fraser Purchase Road, Latrobe. Entombment will follow in the Mary, Mother of Mercy Mausoleum at Saint Vincent Cemetery, Latrobe. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania, 1011 Old Salem Road, Greensburg, PA, 15601, or Westmoreland County Food Bank, 100 Devonshire Drive, Delmont, PA 15626.
