Joseph M. Goberni, Ed.D., of Connellsville, passed away Monday, Aug. 4, 2025, unexpectedly, at the age of 76. Joe was born Oct. 9, 1948, in Uniontown, to Paul J. and Sophia (Bednarik) Goberni. After his father's death, Joe cared for Sophia, and together they "had a great run." Joe had a most interesting and successful career. He wore several hats and wore them well. Joe was a supervisor for the Ohio Barge Line, often referring to himself as a "river rat." Those experiences led to his being a troubleshooter for The Hillman Company. He traveled across the USA performing due diligence for the properties that Elsie and Henry Hillman bought and sold, often flying in Mr. Hillman's private jet. Upon retiring from The Hillman Company, Joe created J. M. Goberni Associates, Inc., an OSHA safety training & consulting company. Most recently he specialized in maritime training at the shipyards in Norfolk, VA. Ship personnel repeatedly asked to take Joe's classes. He was a no-nonsense, down-to-earth instructor. And both teacher and students enjoyed the shared experience. Joe was highly educated, possessing a Bachelor of Science in Education from California State College, a Master of Science from West Virginia University, and a Doctor of Education from West Virginia University. Joe was an adjunct professor at West Virginia University. "Once a Mountaineer, Always a Mountaineer!" Joe was a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers, the National Safety Council, and the American Society of Professional Consultants, to name but a few. Joe was also the manager of Frank Sinatra Advertising Specialties, a promotional products and marketing business. He created unique logos and had great rapport with clients. Besides the Mountaineers, Joe was a Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He was a consummate chef known for his multi-layered lasagna, always cooking with fresh ingredients and with a glass of wine in hand. He enjoyed a good cigar but in recent years had not been lighting them. He was witty and fun-loving; a humble man of strong faith, trusting in guidance from the Virgin Mary. Joe was a loyal friend, a devoted husband, and a steadfast sibling. He was a patriot who loved his country. Joe had a rich, resonant voice, and his early years were spent in radio broadcasting. Joe is survived by his beloved and loving companion of 15 years, Carol Sinatra; his brother Paul (Micki) of Chambersburg, and their children, John, Maureen (Chris), and Michael; his sister, Mary Ann McKee of Sugarland, TX, and her sons, Bryce (Sandy) and Mark (Cindy); and nieces and nephews. Joe is also survived by Norman "Proby" Weimer, his friend of 47 years and partner in several building and remodel projects. Joe was predeceased by his parents; and wife, Peggy. Family and friends are welcome to a Mass at 11:00 a.m. on Oct. 9 (Joe's Birthday) at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Connellsville and a Celebration of Life Luncheon to follow at The Rivers Edge. Joe will be missed every day by those who knew and loved him. His was truly a life well lived. May his memory be eternal. In lieu of flowers and to honor Joe's memory, please consider a donation to St. Vincent DePaul Society, P. O. Box 375, Connellsville, PA 15425. Services are being held under the direction of VITO C.
