Norbert Hammers Obituary

Norbert C. Hammers, 87, of Cheswick, died Sunday, March 27, 2011. He was born May 11, 1923, to the late Roman and Amelia (Hegel) Hammers. Born and raised in Spring Hill in the North Side of Pittsburgh, he moved to Cheswick in 1966. He retired from West Penn Power Co., in Springdale, with 42 years of service. He was a member of and served as usher at Cheswick Presbyterian Church for 45 years. He volunteered at the local food bank and Harmarville Rehabilitation Center. He enjoyed his last family vacation at his beloved Lake Erie the past two summers. Norbert spent his retirement years making the most of his senior citizens bus pass going into downtown, the strip or beyond four times a week. He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Roberta (McMillen) Hammers. He was the loving father of Norine (Greg) Minion, of South Side of Pittsburgh, Dana (John Lawson) Moretti, of Littleton, Colo., and J.C. (Milissa) Hammers; and doting grandfather of Carley, Emily and Grace, of West Deer Township. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Hammers. Norbert donated his body to research the disease that caused his death, mesothelioma. A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, April 9, 2011 at Cheswick Presbyterian Church, 1401 Pittsburgh St., Cheswick, PA 15024. At Norb's request there will be a celebration of life to follow at Frosted Mug, 1608 Pittsburgh St., Cheswick. In lieu of flowers please donate to Cheswick Presbyterian Church or Forbes Hospice, 4800 Friendship Ave., Tower 8, Pittsburgh, PA 15224.
