Sarah Allegra Obituary

Sarah Virginia 'Sally' Allegra, 88, of Ruffs Dale, PA, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, May 23, 2025. Sally was born on June 3, 1936, in Mendon, PA, a daughter of the late Harper S. and Catherine (Wolk) Lynn. She was married for 52 years to Frank P. Allegra, who passed away on Feb. 17, 2009. Sally grew up on a farm in Ruffs Dale, where she lived the values of hard work and family duty. The difficult lessons of the Great Depression were the foundation of her compassion for those in need or at risk. Sally graduated early from high school and was the first in her family to attend college. She received her B.S. from Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1957 and began working as a dietitian. She traveled the world with Frank and worked across the country before returning to Ruffs Dale to raise their family. Sally loved meaningful thought, always questioning and wondering her way toward understanding. As a lifelong learner, she later earned a B.Ed. from Seton Hill University and an M.Ed. from Pennsylvania State University. She taught in the Southmoreland School District until retirement, sharing her knowledge of nutrition, wellness, and hospitality with thousands of students. Food was Sally's art; a meal with her was an act of love. Sally was an active member of the peace movement and cared deeply about social and environmental justice, both locally and globally. She was known and respected for her intellect, empathy, and progressive values. Grounded in faith and love, she pursued a lifelong practice of seeking truth and beauty in grace. Classical music always played wherever Sally was. A lifelong pianist, she listened to WQED religiously and loved the Pittsburgh Symphony. Sally loved her family and was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She will be deeply missed by her loving family: her three children, Catherine Allegra (James Tanner), Joe Allegra (Amy), and Christopher Allegra (Mark Genszler); her grandchildren, Alexander (Becky), Zachary, Jackson, Joshua, and Brianne; her great-grandchildren, Leo and Allegra; her siblings, Ann Gelman, Sam Lynn, John Lynn (Daphne Bicket), and Emma Stevenson (Tom); and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister-in-law, Maureen Lynn; her sister, Catherine Connell (Joe); and her brother-in-law, Bob Gelman. At Sally's request, there will be no viewing. Memorials may be made to Doctors Without Borders, The Nature Conservancy, and/or WQED. Personalized arrangements are under the professional supervision of the ROBERT B. FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME, 105 Spring St., Scottdale (http://www.fergusonfunerals.com).

I would like to add a second entry of thoughts about Sally to my original guest book entry, because there is so much more to say about her. I send my deepest sympathy to the Allegra family that Sally loved with all of her heart. My conversations with Sally were always heartfelt and genuine. It is rare to find someone who can discuss something about nearly every topic....but Sally could. She cared about people and occurrences around the world....not only in her local hometown. She was an advocate for the underdog, not only those in power. She believed in equality for all....not only for the privileged. Sally was a beautiful soul and will be greatly missed, but I will remember that the time spent with Sally was precious. It was an honor to call Sally my colleague and especially my friend. Once again, sending thoughts, prayers, and love to the family and to those who were a special part of Sally's life.

Sally's beautiful Memorial Service was today, and I was exceptionally pleased to be invited to attend. I met Sally while teaching at Southmoreland High School. She was a wonderful colleague and great friend. Sally was a sophisticated lady with an endearing love for people, learning, and being the best person she could possibly be. She was an empathetic, kind, caring, intelligent, and compassionate human being....always ready to lend an ear and give sound and thoughtful advice to others in need. Sally truly cared about everyone, thus, many of us are better for knowing her. It was my privilege and honor to call Sally my dear friend. God Bless You, Sally & Family.
Rest peacefully my friend !! Love, Mabel
P.S. Sally always commented, "Life is worth living." She was right !!

May her exquisite, extraordinary and beautiful memories bring you comfort not only during this difficult time but also as the days pass. Her smile of joy will always remain in my heart.
I remember Sally riding her horse up 3rd avenue in Brown town to visit with Mini and my mom.

Thinking of you, Chris and your family, during this difficult time. Your mom was a stalwart of the community and full of conviction, compassion, and passion about making the world a better place. I was from SHS Class of 1992 but really got to know your mom when I was older starting in 2008. I’ll miss our very in depth and thought provoking conversations. Rest in peace, fellow traveler.

Cathy, if you were any indication of your mom’s personality and traits, she must have been a very sweet and beautiful soul!! I will cover you all in prayer to continue on in life during your mom temporary absence. May God grant her eternal peace and may His perpetual light shine upon her until the day you are all reunited in His kingdom!
