William Gatto Obituary

William Paul "Sonny" Gatto, 86, of Leechburg, passed away on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at Concordia at Cabot. A son of the late Angelo Gatto and Dorothy (Spencer) Gatto, he was born on Aug. 21, 1938, in Vandergrift. William received a full scholarship to attend West Virginia University and play football after high school. He had been employed as a high school physical education and biology teacher by the Kiski Area School District for over 30 years before retiring in 1992. He was a former member of St. Catherine Roman Catholic Church in Leechburg. William attended all of his daughters' softball games, especially being there when their team won the state championship in 1992. He loved spending time at his camp in Kellettville, vacationing in Williamsburg, VA, and snowmobiling around the Allegheny National Forest. He enjoyed hobbies of rifle hunting, reloading his rifles, trout fishing, and pan fishing. Survivors include his daughter, Holly Grisolia (Anthony) of West Leechburg; a son, Jeffrey Paul Gatto; and a grandson, Joshua Paul Gatto. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Carol Ann (McTigue) Gatto, in 2019; and a sister, Delores Mazurek. Arrangements are private and have been entrusted to the CLAWSON FUNERAL AND CREMATION CENTER, 170 Main St., Leechburg, 724-842-1051. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family. I will always remember the time he slammed his biology book on my desk to wake me up, we laughed about it when he came on Fridays with all the retired teachers to G&G. May he rest in peace and prayers to his family

Bob and I were so saddened to hear about Sonny. His sister, Delores, married my Uncle Ray. I remember my Uncle Ray would visit there, and both he and Sonny took turns swinging me by my arms in the yard. He was such a gentle man and always had a quiet smile. He will be missed by many. We hope all the warm memories the family has made over the years will help comfort you at this difficult time....With Love and Prayers, Bob and Lori Faletti (Lorraine Owsiany)

Mr. Gatto was my head swim coach when I was in 9th & 10th grade at Kiski Area. He drove me hard my sophomore year which led to a school record in the 100 yard breaststroke and with our medley relay. I can still hear his strong, motivating voice.

I always respected Mr. Gatto. He was truly a good man! RIP.

Mr. Gatto. I had him for phys. ed. / health class. We came to find out that a friend of mine was his cousin, so I got to know him outside of the school setting. As the years passsed you could often find him at his camp, and share a drink and a laugh. A good, hardworking, stand up guy.

Mr. Gatto was a young, enthusiastic football coach in the mid 1960´s. He was a wonderful coach and an awesome human being. My condolences to his family

Mr. Gatto was my coach and mentor. He was, without doubt, the finest offensive line coach that I had. The techniques he taught me served me in my high school and college careers and as an offensive line coach, myself. He was a great role model and friend. Thank you coach!
