Alfred Gehri Obituary

Alfred P. Gehri Our beloved Al, age 54, passed away Saturday, 03/04/2006. Al was a warm and wonderful man with a wry sense of humor, loved by all who knew him. He was well-educated, leaving Federal Way High School to attend Whitman College, ultimately graduating with honors from Stanford University and receiving his law degree from the University of Washington. He joined the Snohomish County Prosecutor's office in 1979 and served as a Criminal and Civil Deputy in numerous important capacities until his untimely death. Al's life centered around his longtime companion, Megan, his cat Tasha, his career with Snohomish County and law enforcement personnel, and his beach house on Hood Canal. He was in love with his digital camera and photographed anyone and anything of interest that he came in contact with. He was a voracious reader, particularly of The New Yorker, with a great interest in history. He loved to travel, even managing a trip to China before tourists were allowed. He honed his grilling skills at Hood Canal and was always ready to fire up the barbecue. Al will be sorely missed. He is survived by his life partner Megan Graves, mother Eleanor Earley (Jack Crocker), sister Robin D'Amico (Joe), brother Coleman Gehri (Claudia), one nephew, Robert, two nieces, Rebecca and Rachel, aunt Betty Sharer, and two cousins, David and Bruce Sharer. Alfred was preceded in death by his father, Alfred F. Gehri. A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 13, 2006 at 11:00 AM at the Museum of Flight, 9404 East Marginal Way South, Seattle, WA. The family has entrusted arrangements to BONNEY-WATSON Federal Way, 1535 SW Dash Point Rd., Federal Way, WA (253) 839-7317. Remembrances may be made to Washington State Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation, P.O. Box 2407, Issaquah, WA 98027, The American Diabetes Association or the charity of your choice. I, too, was deeply saddened to learn of Al’s death. Although we lost touch after college, it’s clear from these tributes that he continued to be the sharp, witty, thoughtful man he had become over the years since I first met him in junior high school. I wasn’t on the debate team with him, but that didn’t stop him from arguing with me about everything from Watergate to popular music. He introduced me to many things he was passionate about -– Miles Davis’ music, licorice ice cream, the best Mexican food restaurant in Tacoma, Hood Canal. Al was generous with his time and his talents -- he actually had the courage and patience to teach me to drive his VW bug. My condolences to Al’s family, friends and colleagues, who I know will miss him greatly.

Megan and Al's family,

I feel like I know Al so much better after the touching memorial today. I wish I had been able to get to know him better, but I do remember discussing cases of his or mine with common elements--like a particular attorney who shall remain unnamed who caused a lot of grief to each of us, separately. He was always willing to help with a case and to be my inside guide to Snohomish County. Only a month ago he went out of his way to get a certified copy of a document I needed urgently for a trial. I really appreciated his help over the years.

I also remember how much he enjoyed my cookies at Christmas and the Husky football games. Mostly, though, even though I didn't get to spend a lot of "face time" with Al, I know he was a wonderful friend and love to Megan because, in over 20 years, I never heard her say a cross word or criticism about him. I don't know any other couples I can say that about--included my own husband and me.

But I still wish I'd known about that 6th grade brief case so I could have teased him about it!

Tom, Kelly and I are here for you Megan and thinking about you,

Nancy

I am saddened by Al's untimely death. I found him to be a dedicated, honorable, conscientious, careful, and thorough representative of the SRDTF in the personal property claims he argued before me. He was always polite and respectful to the claimants in my and their presence.

Beyond work, Al and I discovered that we shared at least one thing in common: We had both inherited beachfront property on Puget Sound - both of which were damaged during the major storm this spring. I will miss commiserating with him about the joys and travails of low bank beaches!

Megan, Tasha and Al's family - I first met Al in 1989 when he joined the Civil Division of the Prosecutor's Office. It was my pleasure to assist him on many of the cases he handled during his 13+ years in Civil. I echo the sentiments of my fellow co-worders; Al was wonderful to work with and his devotion to and support of law enforcement officers was inspiring. Al always had time to help anyone needing advice. Besides his infectious laugh and sharing cat stories, I think what I will always remember about Al was that he cared about people on a personal level, always taking time to inquire how you were doing and more importantly, taking the time to listen. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

I was saddened to hear of Al Gehri's untimely passing.

Al and I served on the same debate team at Federal Way High School. I greatly admired his gifts as a speaker and as a thinker.

Looking back, I can see that, as a young person, Al already had a very mature understanding of people.

My thoughts and prayers are with him, his family, and his friends.

Dear Megan and Members of Al's Family:

Words are inadequate to express my feelings not only for my own sadness but especially for you all and what you must be feeling. I always thought of Al as a big "teddy bear", loved his infectious laugh and sense of humor and our shared times together. I will miss him but will always remember him fondly.

I was fortunate to have met Al when he first started working in the prosecutor's office. He worked as a DPA in the court I worked in. He was the best...we loved working with Al. His love of the law was so obvious. This is a great loss to all who knew him and to the justice system he served so honorably and loved.
