Betty Berling

1925 - 2025

It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Betty. She left us peacefully on August 23rd at the remarkable age of 99, just 30 hours shy of her 100th birthday. Born August 25th, 1925 in Olympia, WA. to Muriel Frances Pinette and Joseph Smith Grace. Betty was a lifelong resident of Tacoma and her life was one defined not by material wealth, but by love, laughter, resilience, and countless relationships she nurtured over nearly a century. During World War II, Betty stepped up to serve her country as a riveter for Boeing. After that she worked as a sales clerk for JC Penney in South Tacoma. In the early 1960s she began a new chapter working as a car licensing agent. When her office closed she transitioned to the County-City Building and later the PC Annex where she rose to the role of supervisor before retiring in 1988. Betty had many interests throughout her lifetime. She loved square dancing, bowling, golf, sewing, reading, card making and she was an excellent cook. She enjoyed watching the Seahawks, Mariners, Hallmark Channel and Blue Bloods. But more than anything else Betty's greatest joy came from her family. Her love boundless, her home always open and her heart endlessly generous. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack, and her son Captain Patrick Welch. She is survived by her daughters: Nancy Senn, Robbie Rennie, Barbee Booth, and stepson Keith Phillips. Her beautiful legacy continues through her 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren. Though we grieve her passing we also celebrate her entrance into heaven to be with her Lord and Savior for eternity. A Celebration of Life was held on Saturday, October 11th, at The Shepherd of the Hill Presbyterian Church in Puyallup. In lieu of flowers you may make donations to her favorite charities.
