Tacoma, Washington - Hayes J. Alexander Jr. passed away peacefully on March 4, 2024, at the age of 90 in Tacoma, Washington from complications of Alzheimer's disease.
Hayes was born on November 24, 1933, in New Iberia, Louisiana. After High School, Hayes joined the United States Air Force in 1953. After 21 years, Hayes retired in 1975 at the rank of Master Sergeant and remained in Tacoma for the rest of his life. Known for his love of travel and golf, he was a long-time member of the Tee and Turf Golf Club of Tacoma. He was also deeply involved with community activities including the Northeast Tacoma Neighborhood Committee, the NAACP Education Committee and the Hilltop Library Planning Committee.
Hayes is survived by his daughter Susan of University Place, his son Hayes III of Tacoma and his niece and nephew, Helen and James of Houston, Texas.
Hayes was cremated but no service is planned. He once suggested that those who wish to remember him might swing a few at their local golf course, volunteer for the favorite organization, or go somewhere they have never been. Donations may be made to the NAACP, Tacoma branch, P.O. Box 5323, Tacoma, Washington 98405 in Hayes' memory.
His family would like to thank the kind staff of the Garden House at Merrill Gardens for their care during his final years.
