JAMES DOLLARHIDE Obituary

James C. Dollarhide A Life Well Lived Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and theater performer James C. "Jim" Dollarhide, born in Corvallis, Oregon, on August 24, 1937, was one of seven children born to Rev. Albert R. Dollarhide and Marjory Wiles Dollarhide. A graduate of Pacific Lutheran University, former United States Marine, and long-time business owner, Jim was best known as a local actor-singer, having appeared on many local and regional stages throughout the area in both leading and supporting roles. His passion for performance led to meeting his wife, Kathleen "Kat" Dollarhide (nee Hanson) onstage in Seattle 54 years ago. The couple continued their courtship during the Seattle World's Fair and married in Los Angeles in December, 1962. He most enjoyed performing when he could share the stage with his wife. Jim shared his musical talents as both chorister and bass-baritone soloist for regional opera, choruses and churches throughout his singing career. An avid supporter of Tacoma Musical Playhouse from its inception, when not appearing onstage he served as house manager with his wife, Kat, and was a founding member of its board of directors. He also served as a board member in prior years for various other theaters in the Puget Sound area. Though his father was a Pentecostal preacher, he remained a Lutheran throughout his married life. He shared many travel experiences with family and friends throughout the United States and Canada, but did not receive a passport until he became a senior citizen, then traveling to China, England, Mexico and Costa Rica. He is survived by his wife and sweetheart of almost 53 years, Kat, his daughter, Robin Hoover, granddaughter, Kearstyn Takemoto, and step-grandchildren, Pepper Jimenez and Cody Hoover. He was predeceased by sister, Eunice Stearns, and brothers Norman, Richard and Leonard. He is also survived by brothers, David (Ginger) of Stanwood, WA and William of Lynnwood, WA, and several nieces and nephews. Any donations should be made in his name to Tacoma Musical Playhouse or Franciscan Hospice House, where he passed away on September 4, 2015. A celebration of his life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 26th at The Spire, 710 S. Anderson 98405.

Jim's wonderful voice whether in song or laughter brings a vivid presence to the man. His gifts and knowledge of how to get a set ready, were freely shared. His spirit was ever present in building Tacoma Musical Playhouse. Thank you Jim.

Jims passing leaves a hole in my heart.
I treasure my memories of sharing the stage with him as well as so many other times together.
Jim was truly one of the easiest people to like and love.
The world has lost a life force unlike any other.
My deepest sympathy dear Kat.

When I think of Jim I cannot help but think of his contagious laugh. You could ALWAYS tell when the Dollarhides had arrived at a social gathering 'cuz Jim's piercing and unrestrained laugh would overtake the sound in the room like otherwise only bagpipes could! I can still hear that laugh and I hope there never comes a day when I canNOT hear it. I have only heard three other laughs that are so unique and memorable: my (late) sister's, that of one of my sisters-in-law, and my daughter's. All were (or are) blessed with a quality so singular, so penetrating and so identifiable that they each stand alone with their unmistakable characteristic; and I cannot help but at least smile when I recall any of those very distinctive laughs. Jim's laugh is only one of many of his delightful characteristics that fill me with happy memories of him and fondness for our many happy times together; and even if the laugh stood all alone, one could leave far less behind than the unparallelled sound and reminder of such an unrestrained and joyful laugh.

CAT, JIM HAS LEFT US. BUT MY MEMORY OF THE OLD SEATTLE THEATER WILL ALWAYS BE BRIGHT. THE SEED OF OUR CAREERS. WHERE IS ANY ONE TO WRITE "SKIN OF OUR TEETH"

I shared the stage a couple times with Jim, and to me he'll always be El Gallo in The Fantasticks. Rest in Peace.
