JEROME HOBAN Obituary

Jerome L. (Jerry) Hoban, Sr. Died Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at University of Washington Medical Center in the arms of his loving wife in Seattle following a brief illness. He leaves his wife of 17 years, Kathleen Hoban; his son Jerome L. Hoban, Jr. and his wife Diane, son Timothy M. Hoban and his wife Theresa, son Patrick J. Hoban and his wife Raleigh, and son Steven D. Hoban; and daughter Jennifer L. Hoban and her husband Jonathan Drum. He leaves eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind three stepdaughters, Carrina Olson and her husband Cody, Alicia Sands and her husband Glenn, and Jamie Painter and her husband Randy; and six grandchildren. Jerry Hoban, or "Sonny" as he was known to his parents and sisters, was born on February 13, 1932 in Detroit, Michigan. He was the youngest of four and the only boy. When Jerry was fourteen his family left Detroit and took Route 66 to Los Angeles, California. Not content with this new adventure, Jerry, with his sister Veronica's help, enlisted in the US Marine Corps. After two years he was honorably discharged for being underage. Once he turned sixteen, and this time with his parents' blessing, he joined the US Army. One of his first assignments was in Japan participating in of the Occupation of Japan. Jerry worked in Army Intelligence during the Korean War on General MacArthur's staff. He was part of the US Military Advisor Group (MAG) in Vietnam, and spent most of his armed forces career in the Military Police and Criminal Investigation Command (CID), with overseas tours twice to Korea, Germany, and a tour in Alaska. One of his favorite assignments was serving as a CID Agent in Fort Lewis, Washington. In 1972, after twenty-four-plus years of dedicated service, Jerry retired from the military with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3. He then went on to begin a career with the US Veterans Administration. In 1973 he moved his family from Tempe, Arizona to Fremont, California, where he became Chief of Police of the VA Hospital in Palo Alto, California. Jerry retired from the VA in 1984. In 1989 Jerry and his wife, Gemma A. Hoban, moved from Fremont, California to Lakewood, Washington. Sadly, Gemma passed away in 1991. Jerry was fortunate to find love again with his wife Kathleen, and for the past 17 years she has been his loving companion, helping him through the many hurdles in life. Jerry's passions included reading, photography, computers, and his companion dog Suki. For nearly twenty years Jerry worked on Fort Lewis in the Education Services Department, assisting soldiers with their continuing education. Helping the next generation of service men and women provided him with great satisfaction. Jerry was preceded in passing by his first wife Gemma Ann Mitchell Hoban; his parents Dennis Michael Hoban and Esther Pieper Hoban; his sisters Veronica Hoban Hansen (William Colrus), Dorothy Hoban Phipps (Robert E. Phipps), and Regina Hoban Von Flue (Robert Von Flue). A funeral service will be held at the Soldier's Chapel on Fort Lewis on Saturday, June 10, 2017, at 1 pm. Reception will be at the Lakewood Elks Club following the service. Jerry will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
