Kurtis Cross Obituary

Kurtis Allen Cross

February 17, 1967 - March 21, 2025

Olympia, Washington - It is with heavy hearts that our family announces the passing of Kurtis Cross on 3/21/25. He was born 2/17/67 in Lakewood, WA and is survived by his wife Jill, sons Jason and Aaron, his parents Stan and Joan Cross, brothers Kent (Sarah) and Kyle (Kelly), and many nieces and nephews. Kurt attended Franklin Pierce Schools, graduated 1985 and participated in varsity athletics. He entered Green River College and transferred to WSU to earn an architectural degree. His senior year he studied architecture in Europe at the University of Copenhagen - allowing him to study and tour a variety of countries. While in Germany, he chiseled several pieces of the "Berlin Wall" to bring home. Kurt spent nearly 30 years as an architect with the BLRB firm and with the Olympia School District. Kurt's life work resonates in many NW buildings and schools. Kurt enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, hiking, skiing, sports, and his "1968 Camaro". Kurt will be missed by all who knew him. Celebration of Life: May 3rd, 2PM, Lacey Community Center, 6729 Pacific Ave. SE, Lacey. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fred Hutch Cancer Center or to a blood bank. See full obituary @ www.powersfuneralhome.com

Kurt was a valued friend and his vocation overlapped mine at both BLRB and then the Olympia SD. I share the privilege of that time witnessing his many gifts unselfishly offered to improve the human condition. Fond memories are on my mind for Mount Tahoma HS, Garfield HS, Wapato HS, Olympia HS, Reeves MS, Baker MS and multiple other short sprint special projects. As a man at work he was an absolute joy. Our days passed quickly and we shared many long work days.

As a guy at play the YMCA hoops and "wallyball" recreation offered Kurt the balance to share another dimension of his spirit and he was full of enthusiasm in that context. On the maple floor, when he set a screen or gained position for a rebound you felt that physical presence and a mysterious supply of extra sauce.

On this weekend especially, I think of mission over vocation and Kurt was quite literally graced with the divine focus to treat others the way he wished to be treated.

We are deeply grateful for Kurt´s good works the support he had from a solid family ..... we honor God´s "best in class" people by carrying on with their mission and highlighting those examples we so deeply care for.

Kurt was part of our BLRB Architects team. He was well loved and respected by all because of his thoughtfulness, competence and consciousness. Besides all that seriousness he was always ready to have a goodtime. Working hard, playing hard and being a team player is how I'll fondly remember Kurt. May his soul be in heaven and his family be consoled by knowing him and his love.

We are so sorry for your loss of Kurt way to young. Kurt was a loyal participant in our downtown Tacoma YMCA basketball noon hoops group for many years. Kurt was a great player and competitor but an even greater person. We would compete like dogs and then laugh about how great we were. You always wanted Kurt on your team because he was a consummate grinder with strong, rebounding, defense, and timely scoring. We even created a "noon hoops hall of fame for years of participation" and Kurt was an inaugural member.
I still have a shirt with scores of names including Kurt's. "Noon Hoops Hall of Fame-Legends are Made Here". We would meet for the induction ceremony on the first day of the March madness which coincidently was March 20/21 this year. On behalf of our band of brothers! RIP Kurt.

I hope all the great memories helps offset the grief of losing a loved one. I met Kurt once and he left an impression I won't forget. I worked many years with Stan and know how much the boys were loved by him & Joan.
