LARRY CARNEY Obituary

Larry Carney 1942 - 2018 On Tuesday, April 3, Larry Carney went to sleep and reached the finish line. It was peaceful, he was ready, and knew he had done everything he could to take care of the love of his life, Pat. He had spent his lifetime caring for his younger brother Bob, his two sons, Rob and Colin, and his grandchildren. Larry was a graduate of Renton High School, the University of Washington, and earned his law degree from the University of Puget Sound. Larry was a lifetime educator, spending 13 years as a teacher and 13 years as an administrator for the Puyallup School District. He was a longstanding member of the Puyallup Valley Rotary Club and the United Methodist Church. His lifetime of educating, of leadership, and service to school-community-church have ended, but the positive impact he made for so many individuals serves as his enduring legacy. Services will be held at the Puyallup Methodist Church, 1919 Pioneer Ave in Puyallup, on April 14th at 3:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, please consider giving to the Rotary International Foundation at www.rotary.org or to the Wesley Bradley Park Senior Living facility at wesleychoice.org

Mr. Carney was such an influence in my life...his Civics class brought me a sense of public service that lasted approximately 30 years in various forms. He gave us food for thought in times when we as students didn't know where to turn and above all else, made us THINK...thank you for all that you did for me and countless others.

Larry was the light of my life. He was always supportive, encouraging, compassionate, comforting. We had been together since sophomore year in high school. He filled my heart and has left me with many plans we'd made for a future together. I will deeply miss him as I begin this new journey, but I know he is with me in spirit. Our family wants to express thanks to the hundreds of folks who have remembered him and shared their stories. It has been very uplifting to see how many of you loved him too.

I graduated from Rogers HS in 1977 and it was my good fortune to have Mr. Carney for Psychology. I always felt supported by him and certainly held him in high regard. After graduating, I had an accident and he came to visit me at my parents home! I was so glad to see him, and I'll never forget that he assured me it was ok to call him Larry now. I couldn't imagine it then or now. He will always be Mr. Carney to me. I know he will be missed. Bless you, Mr. Carney.

I took both history and psychology classes from Mr. Carney during my time at Rogers (1968-1971), and enjoyed them both. He had a gift for making any subject he spoke on intriguing -- and fun. He was one of my two favorite teachers then, and still is in my memories. I had no idea that he had a law degree! Thank you all (his family) for sharing him with us for so long.

Larry and I worked together for 9 years. I greatly admired his opinions.. views and wise, thoughtful council. He was faithful in all things. Heaven is better with his arrival....

It was my honor being a student of Mr. Carney in my senior year of 1979/1980. He forced his students to think deeply and question. His humanity for his students and endeavors they learned was present each and every day. Being a teacher myself, I only hope to bring to my students some of the qualities Mr. Carney gave to me. He was a great man and teacher. His passing is a loss to this world.

Larry and I began dating as Sophomores at Renton High School. We married spring break of our junior year at the University of Washington. We began our teaching careers together in Patterson, CA. After just one year Larry and I began working on our 5th year of schooling returning to U of W. We decided to stay until he'd finished his master's degree so I taught in Everett while he went to school. Next we traveled together to join the Puyallup School District and he never left during the rest of his career. Our sons, Rob and Colin, attended all their schooling in the Puyallup District helping to make our household loyal Rogers Ram fans. To this day Larry has remained connected to the district and enjoyed having coffee every week with other retired district administrators. Larry loved people, singing, being in front of the microphone whether announcing a football or basketball game, conducting an assembly, serving as MC at a Daffodil function, conducting business at a committee, or negotiationof contracts. Singing was his gift and passion. So was his family, church, Rotary Club, theater, and in later life cruising. Easter Sunday was the first time in many years he couldn't sing at church and he knew the remainder of his life was near. He was at peace with that knowledge and prepared to meet the Lord. Tuesday he announced just before bedtime, "My list is all checked off." Larry went to bed, closed his eyes, and promptly passed to life eternal. Life is unpredictable and can change in the twinkling of an eye. Larry tried to share that with those who are now in their retirement years to plan and prepare for the future. He worked tirelessly to help bring Wesley Community at Bradley Park to Puyallup. I will be moving there when it opens just as we'd planned to do. I will rejoice knowing his final task was completed and know he'll be watching from afar my final journey without him by my side. All of us would say to Larry, "Well done good and faithful servant. God bless you and keep you in the palm of His hand."
