LENN RICHTER Obituary

Lenn Roy Richter Age 79, born July 25, 1939 in Tacoma, Washington, the 3rd of 11 children of the late Leila (Westnedge) Richter and the late Ernest Richter of Redondo, Washington, passed away August 15, 2018 in his Port Orchard home. Lenn attended The Burnley School of Professional Art at 14 on scholarship, graduated from Federal Way High School in 1958, and attained vocational degrees in blueprint reading and welding. Drafted in 1963, he served in the US Army Honor Guard, standing guard for President John F. Kennedy's funeral procession. In the house he built in Federal Way, Lenn and Corrine raised 7 children. A professional cartoonist and illustrator, he was also a 42-year employee of the Tacoma pulp and paper mill (St. Regis, Champion, and Simpson Kraft), retiring as kamyr operator in 2002. Lenn was the beloved partner of Shirley Best, and former husband of the late Corrine (Blackwell) Richter. Predeceased by his siblings Ray, Jess, and Leah, he is survived by his children: Maria Richter (Jason Munger), Monica (Brian) Sergent, Dan (Ember) Richter, Cathleen (Dennis) Twichel, Deborah Richter, Colleen (Rick) Schroeder, and Shelley (JC) Bitseff; sisters: Rita, Myra, and Myrna; brothers: Kerry, Keith, Mark, and Neil; 13 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. Lenn was a Renaissance man: aviator, craftsman, inventor, ultramarathon runner, climber, artist, storyteller, writer, traveler, gardener, volunteer, and family man. He served as Vice President of USW Local 237, a Jubilee Community Garden cofounder, and EAA Young Eagles chapter 406 (Bremerton) coordinator, flying over 850 children in his Piper Cherokee. Lenn's adventurous, magnanimous spirit, plus his humor, joy of singing, yodeling, and unique style of 50's dancing touched many lives. To read about Lenn's life, or to donate to the Lenn R. Lenn was a man of many talents as noted in the memorials. A trait I admire him for was his generosity with his time. I will miss him.

I feel so privileged to have been a friend of Lenn's for over 20 years! We met in 1997 at the big airshow in Oshkosh. Over the years either he would fly down to Southern California or I would fly up to Washington at least every other year. Other times we kept in touch via email, phone calls or just thinking about each other. I'm a Young Eagle pilot, too, but was so impressed with his enthusiasm to fly kids and how he kept up with them. I loved his Christmas cards and framed them, so now we have a "memorial wall" to Lenn in our upstairs hallway. When Chuck came into my life, he and Lenn became fast friends, too. And when Shirley came into Lenn's life, we also became fast friends. We'll miss Lenn terribly and send our deepest condolences to Shirley and Lenn's family. Ceci Stratford and Chuck Kamphausen

I'm so privileged to have known Lenn and to have been his friend for so many years! We met at the big EAA airshow in Oshkosh WI in 1997 and have gone back and forth between Washington and Southern California. Over the years he would fly down to our big hangar party or we would fly up to Bremerton to visit him, always being in touch by phone or email if we couldn't fly to see each other. When Chuck came into the picture, he and Lenn became fast friends. Likewise, when Shirley joined Lenn, she became one of ours. I'm a Young Eagle pilot, too, but was so inspired by his dedication to the kids he flew and how many and how often he flew! I love the Christmas cards/cartoons he drew to honor his Young Eagles and framed them every year. Now we have a "memorial wall" to Lenn in our upstairs hallway. Our deepest condolences to Shirley and Lenn's whole family. Ceci Stratford and Chuck Kamphausen.

Lenn was a one of my best friends. His passion for all things in life, particularly his partner, Shirley, and his seven amazing children, was an inspiration. Lenn earned the respect of all those who came into his orbit through his earnest and straight-forward way of approaching life. He could talk with you on any subject, while adding his peculiar insight to the topic at hand, an insight you may not have previously considered. Lenn was brilliant!
Being with Lenn meant never being bored, for as his friends and family knows, Lenn bristled at the mention of "boredom", and saying "I'm bored" would evoke a stern rebuke. Lenn was the most inquisitive man I have known - he didn't have time to be bored.
I will miss my friend, but I am a better man for having known him. The world is a better place for having shared its time with him.
Godspeed, Lenn. I love you and I miss you.
