MANFORD HOGMAN Obituary
Manford E. Hogman Manford Hogman passed to his eternal reward in heaven with his Savior Jesus Christ on May 6, 2017, at the age of 95 years. He was born on March 14, 1922 in Fancy Prairie, Menard County, Illinois. As one of eight children of Nicholas and Mary (Becker) Hogman and living on a small farm, Manford and his siblings spent much of their early years helping with farm activities and learning skills of manual labor. In 1937, the family moved to Puyallup Washington, driving in a camper Nick built on the back of a flatbed truck. They settled in Puyallup where they found work in farming and sawmills. The original family home was on Inter Avenue, where they farmed blackberries. Dad was a proud graduate of Puyallup High School Class of 1940. He attended the Swedish Baptist Church, later known as Pioneer Avenue Baptist Church and later named Bethany Baptist Church. It was at church, in 1946, that he met the love of his life, Margery Ericson, whose home was in Frederic Wisconsin. Dad followed her back to the Midwest, and spent the fall, winter, and spring of 1946-1947 working in Hopkins, Minnesota, courting Mom on weekends in Wisconsin. They were married June 26, 1947 in Trade Lake, Wisconsin and returned to Puyallup where they made their home for the remainder of their lives. Manford was an expert carpenter/craftsman and built many homes in Puyallup and the surrounding areas. He personally crafted the cabinets and custom woodworking in many of the homes and other buildings he constructed during his many years as a contractor. He also designed many of the buildings he constructed, drawing the plans in the evenings after a full day of work on a current building project. He designed and built the last three homes that he and his family occupied. Working with a local architect Dad built several churches, including Bethany Baptist, Federal Way United Methodist, Trinity Reformed, Lake Boren Christian Center, Shelton Faith Lutheran and Jovita Baptist. Manford's attention to detail and desire to provide the highest quality of work made him sought after as a local builder. His brother Bill, and sons Phil and Scott often worked with him on his jobs. Manford attended the same church, now Bethany Baptist, and was an active member of that congregation for 80 years. He served in many capacities, mostly leading building and facilities boards and committees. He was a willing volunteer for activities of his church and the Baptist General Conference (now Converge NW), and to the shock of everyone even sang in the church choir! Throughout his working years, he was heavily involved with church friends working locally on projects and cleanup for Lake Retreat Baptist Camp in Ravensdale Washington. After retiring in 1987 he and Margery spent 2 years in Plains, Montana, supervising the construction of the main lodge for Camp Bighorn Baptist Camp beside the Clark Fork River. Manford's love for the outdoors shaped most of his leisure time activities. With three children in tow, the family spent many weekends hiking, camping and fishing throughout Washington. Dad was an avid hunter, and annually hunted for deer and elk with his favorite hunting partners. Later, those partners included his sons and nephew. Manford was preceded in death by his beloved wife Margery, parents Nick and Mary Hogman, sisters and their spouses Florence (Lyle) Hankel, Ruth (Weldon) Johnson, Jane (John) Giuliani, Lila (Tom) Swift Sr., and brothers and spouses Ernie (Barbara), William (Emma Alice), Harold, and two great-granddaughters. He is survived by his three children Sherill Pederson, Phil (Debi Perry) Hogman, and Scott Hogman, four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Lois Hogman Olsen and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Bethany Baptist Church on Saturday May 27 at 1:00 pm, 713 S. Hill Park Dr. Puyallup. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hogman Memorial Fund at Camp Bighorn, 1850 MT Highway 135, Plains, MT 59859.
