MARY SUTLOVICH Obituary

Mary J. Sutlovich, CPS Born June 28, 1919 in Gig Harbor, WA; died May 20, 2009 in Seattle. Loving mother of Ivan, Paul, Teresa, and Martin; grandmother of Donna, Robert, Elizabeth, and Gregory. She was predeceased by her parents, Ivan J. and Tonka (Radman) Mladinov of Tacoma and her brothers, Joseph D. and John K. Mladinov. Also survived by many friends and her extended family. Mary Mladinov grew up in a Croatian Fishing family in Tacoma, WA, went to Stadium HS and the Univ. of Puget Sound. For a decade she ran a weekly radio program on KMO Radio called "The Croatian Hour" featuring interviews and Lodge social events. She held a wartime federal position with the US Army Corps of Engineers at Ft. Lewis, where she met and married Ludwig Luke Sutlovich in Oct., 1945 and moved to Seattle's Magnolia district to raise their family. She was devoted to the Carmelite saints and was an active member of Our Lady of Fatima parish where her children were in school. In 1971 Mary rejoined the workforce by volunteering at the Heart Association, working for the Draft Board during the Vietnam War, and later with the FAA, where she was Editor for their 7 State internal weekly newsletter, the NW Mtn. Region Intercom. She was a contributor to the FAA Flyer, a national publication. She was awarded for furthering the Federal Women's Program, the Civil Rights & Human Relations Committees which help bond employees together and for helping Type Certify the Boeing 757 & 767 jet planes. Mary retired in 1988 after 25 years of federal service and enjoyed a quiet retirement traveling, participating in Elderhostel and watching the family grow. She loved flowers, public TV and was engaged in writing and e-mails to her far flung family, including the Australians who befriended her future husband during WW2. She was a member of the AIAA, Professional Secretaries Intl., the Museum of Flight and the Ellis Island Foundation as well as the Smithsonian, Society of the Airway Pioneers, Flight Standards Retirees, and the FAA Rocky Mtn. Region Fellowship Assn. Mary was a member of the Croatian Fraternal Union, a lodge for those who immigrated to the US from her Yugoslavian homeland. She was a supporter of Canines for Independence, an organization devoted to training and placing service dogs for the handicapped. Recitation of the Rosary will be today, Wednesday, at 10:30 AM, with a Funeral Mass at 11 AM, BOTH at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 3218 West Barrett St., Seattle.
