Milton Guhr Obituary

Milton Guhr

October 26, 1929 - October 20, 2023

Milton, Washington - Milton (Milt) John Guhr, of Milton (don't say it!), WA, age 93, died peacefully at home on October 20th, 2023, just shy of his 94th birthday. He finally got his wish and "entered the kingdom of heaven." He was born October 26, 1929, in Barron, Wisconsin to Gertrude Lauretta West Bolstad and Oscar Bolstad. In 1940, he was adopted by his wonderful father, John George Guhr. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1948.

Milt served in the United States Air Force from January 1950 to December 1953; stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany. He was a proud member of the Air Force Band, playing cornet. He was a true musician. Upon hearing any trumpet musical piece, he could pick up his cornet and play it by ear.

He worked for the Boeing Company twice but left both times to go work for the Northern Pacific Railway as a railroad freight brakeman-conductor. He retired from Burlington Northern Railroad in 1993 after almost 39 years of faithful service as a "rail."

His hobbies included racing homing pigeons (Tacoma Racing Pigeon Club), gardening, and reading. Walking Bradley Lake was a favorite activity. He was fiercely independent. He was a patient, kind, and generous man--a shining example to his family. He made an impression on everyone he met with his intelligence and wit which followed him until the end.

He leaves behind his daughter, Lori Neckermann (Ron); two granddaughters; and three "great-grands." He also leaves behind a close cousin, Marlene. He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Myrt, in 2008 whom he met while she was a clerk at the Northern Pacific Railway union depot.

Viewing will be held at Hill Funeral Home in Puyallup on November 1st from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held at a date yet to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to American Diabetes Association, American Lung Association, or Salvation Army.

I worked with Milt on the BN from 1988 to 1992. We worked the same crew from Seattle to Wenatchee. He was a great guy, and a good friend and I will miss him.

You dad and mine worked together for the NP. I remember how much my dad (Roy Boyce) treasured their friendship. Blessings to your family.
