Tacoma, Washington - Nan Erwin (Hurlbut), a devoted mother, grandmother, and caregiver, passed away on November 3, 2025, in Tacoma, Washington, at the age of 93.
Nan was born on October 29, 1932, in Tacoma, Washington to Clarence and Evalyn (Nelson) Hurlbut. Nan spent her formative years immersed in the community which she cherished throughout her life. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1950, where she actively participated in choir, glee club, and the rifle club, demonstrating a spirited nature and a wide range of interests.
Following high school, Nan pursued her passion for helping others at the Tacoma General School of Nursing, graduating in 1953. After completing her studies, she moved to Santa Barbara, California, where she enjoyed the sunshine and worked in the local Emergency Room with fellow graduates from Tacoma General. Nan's commitment to healthcare led to a long and fulfilling career as a registered nurse. She worked alongside Dr. Robert Kallsen in private practice for 30 years, caring for multiple generations of families. She was known for her unwavering dedication, always returning patient calls the same day, even late into the night from her home. Her compassionate care was recognized by many, as evidenced by the abundance of gifts from grateful patients that adorned her Christmas tree each year.
Beyond her professional achievements, Nan embraced life with enthusiasm. Her family was her joy. She adored her children and grandchildren. Nan was a familiar face in the stands, cheering on her grandchildren at their games and performances over the years. She enjoyed snow skiing, gardening, taking long walks, and traveling to new destinations that piqued her curiosity. She especially enjoyed her many cruises around the world and spending Christmas & holidays in Sun Valley, Idaho. Her vibrant spirit and ever-present warm smile reflected the happiness she found in everyday experiences.
Nan is survived by her son, Greg Erwin (Lisa), her daughter, Gretchen Griffin (Whitney), her grandchildren, Wyatt, Cooper and Gabriela Griffin, Margo Baker, Bailey Erwin, and her precious great-grandson. Nan also cherished the memory of her sister, Elaine Sabol, who preceded her in death.
May Nan's memory comfort those she touched with her kindness and light. She was laid to rest at Haven of Rest in Gig Harbor, Washington.
