PAUL LEMLEY Obituary

Paul W. Lemley Born February 1st, 1935, to Lyle and Ruth Lemley joining older sister Patty. He died peacefully on September 15th, 2010, after a courageous battle with cancer. He grew up in Tacoma, graduated from Stadium High School in 1953, attended the College of Puget Sound, and graduated from the University of Oregon Dental School. While in Dental School, he met the love of his life, Dory, and wed three months later in Portland, Oregon, on August 24th, 1958. Paul graduated from dental school in 1959 and practiced in Tacoma for 33 years. He was a member of the Pierce County Dental Society and the Washington State Dental Association, chairing the peer review committee. One of his greatest fulfillments was conducting short term dental mission trips to Jamaica, Guatemala, Ecuador, and Mexico between 1985 and 2000. Paul was a devoted family man who had many hobbies and ministries. While living in Fircrest, he built and raced a Thunderbird class sailboat out of the Tacoma Yacht Club. "Papa" loved to spoil his grandchildren out on Vashon Island with boating, swimming, sharing his Lionel trains, playing games, but most of all giving them the gift of his time. He loved "Naval" history, building scratch model ships, and boating with friends. Paul was an active member of First Covenant and University Place Presbyterian Churches. He gave much of his time to Young Life, small group Bible studies, and the International Prayer Breakfast, where he and Dory volunteered during most of his retirement years. Even though his professional career, family, and hobbies were important to him, he desired to be known as a follower of Jesus. He is survived by his devoted wife, Dory, of 52 years, his children David (Janie) - grandchildren Kevin, Jason, Kristen, son Stephen (Sharon) - grandchildren P.J., Katherine, Benjamin, daughter Margaret (Steve) - grandchildren Caroline, Robby, and his sister Patty (Dr. J.T. Chapman) and their children and families. The family would like to thank Dr. Oliveira and his caring staff, the wonderful women in the infusion center, the U.P.P.C. church family, and the numerous friends who came alongside of them during this journey. The memorial service will be held Thursday, September 23rd, 1:00 p.m. at U.P.P.C. Memorial donations may be made to The International Foundation, P.O. Box 112221 Tacoma, WA. 98411; Young Life, 4020 S. 56th St. Suite 210A, Tacoma, WA 98409; and U.P.P.C. Missions. Please visit our guest book at newtacoma.com .

Dear Dory,
We cherish our memories of Paul. He brought insight and wisdom to our small group discussions. He was our friend who pushed us nearer to God.

May God hold you and your family in His loving arms. Give you comfort, strength and peace.

Dear Aunt Dory,
Smiling at my many memories of my young summers with you and Uncle Paul, Paul lives on. While sad, I know you are resting in your faith, God's love and family. See you Thursday.

Dory and Family, we are so sorry to hear of your loss. He was a special man and will forever be remembered by all who came in contact with him. As Walt Whitman quoted:

He is not gone, He is just away,
With a cherry smile and the wave of the hand,
He has wandered into an unknown land,
And left us wondering how very fair that land
May be, since he tarries there.
God bless and keep you. Louis and Marie Williams, (Tacoma)

Dear Dory and Family,
It is a sad day at the loss of such a great man. I think my best memory of him is that he was the only Dad that would play hoop out in the driveway with us. He allowed me to shoot there anytime, day or night, 365 days a year. Your family has provided me with so many happy memories and friendships. We are all better people for having the honor to know him.

Dave, sorry to hear about the passing of your father. He was a special man. I remember his kindness when we had younglife meetings at your parents home. May God Bless you and your family. Ron Grant, Foss Class of 78

Dory and family,

We are so sorry to here of Paul's passing. We feel awful about not being able to be at the service. We are down in Lafayette getting Cissy's mom settled in her assisted living place.
Paul was a special man. I have always felt like one of the family. From playing hoops in the driveway to ski trips or just hanging out at the house, I have always felt welcome. He will be missed, but what a comfort to know that he is now in a better place. We will be thinking and praying for you on Thursday.
Hang in there,
Gus and Cissy
