RICHARD BATTIN Obituary

Richard Alan Battin, DDS Richard Alan Battin, 79, passed away with his family by his side on December 5, 2010 after complications from a serious stroke. Born on Oct. 2, 1931 and raised in Seattle, Richard (Dick) attended Roosevelt High School and went on to graduate from University of Washington School of Dentistry. He practiced dentistry in Normandy Park for 35 years, and was adored and remembered by his patients for his kind and gentle touch. But Dick's true love was his family, in whom he instilled his passion for Grouse Hills Tree Farm in Napavine (Washington), a once-abused property he and his beloved wife Judy purchased in 1971. Inspired by his mission to leave the land better than he found it, he was a true environmentalist who took extreme pride in single-handedly restoring the property to a picturesque, enchanting paradise. His dedication to stewardship was recognized with the 1996 Washington State Tree Farmer of the Year award and his appointment to the 11-member Washington Forest Practices Board. Throughout his life, Dick was many things to countless people: a one-of-a-kind, irreplaceable husband, father, grandfather and friend, a man of compassion, integrity and a generosity of spirit who enjoyed making time to inspire and mentor not only his own children but many others as well. He will forever hold a special place in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known him, especially for his savvy wit and sense of humor, which encouraged everyone he knew to remember that the true joy of life is relishing the journey. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 49 years, Judy Battin, and his children Apryl Battin, Rick Battin, Robyn Martin (husband Jeff), Jana Claxton (husband Tim, grandchildren Ella, Colin and Jonah), and Laurie Crawford. A celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at 2:00pm, LifeWay Church, 5015 SW Dash Point Road, Federal Way, WA 98023; 253-517-8630.

Judy has been my dear friend since first grade in Colfax, WA. I remember how excited she was when she met Dick on a ski trip to Montana. Everytime I talked to him on the phone or visited them in Federal Way and Napavine, I always felt I had known Dick for as long as I had known Judy. I have often remembered our beautiful day with our Colfax classmates at your home in Napavine and have wished for more of Dick's wonderful white corn on the cob.

He was a wonderful husband and father and will be greatly missed. My heart has been with you, Judy and April, Rick, Jana and Robyn every since his illness in October. You all have such wonderful memories of a good life with your husband and father.

My thoughts are will you all.

Dr. Battin was our dentist, in fact he was the dentist for the WHOLE MEENTS family! We just loved him and enjoyed seeing/visiting with him. I remember when Karl and I got to attend his retirement party in Des Moines. What a treat that was, seeing his enjoyment in the anticipation of working on his tree farm and enjoying life and not having to go to work, looking into all of our mouths. :O}
Karl and I have one regret - that we never got to visit with Dr. Battin and Judy at their tree farm home. Always meant to but.... We thought of the Battin's often - he will be missed. Our love, thoughts and prayers to all of the family.

There are no words I have for the Battin clan to express the loss of this wonderful and unique man.

He spoke often of his love for Judy, his children and grandchildren. They delighted him and he was proud of every one of his kids and grand kids.

A fairly close second was his love for his tree farm and overall love for nature.

I was privileged to have frequent contact with Dick and always admired his quest to learn new things. He carried a lot of information in his head to begin with and I often wondered how he could fit any more in there but he did. :) He loved learning new things. He had interests in many areas but it was mostly in the environment - from geology to fruit flies. And beyond.

I will miss my dear friend, Dick.

My mom met Judy Battin many years ago when she signed up to take a Flower Arrangement class in Federal Way, next thing we know the Battin kids (Apryl, Robyn and Jana at the time) were having swim lessons alongside the Atherton kids (Ang, Joy, Bobby and Tammy). Since that time in elementary school our family has grown up with the wonderful Battin Clan, I remember the excitement when Ricky was born. Always kind, very generous, warm & friendly, but as strict as my parents, Dr. Battin and Judy leave many fond memories of my growing up.
We are so very sorry for your loss. He will always be a great husband and father in our eyes. We celebrate his life.
In our hearts forever,
Love,
Joy Feider & family and

We liked Dick so much, got to know him well through the marriage of his daughter Jana to my son Tim, enjoyed his dry humour, and especially his outstanding love of, and knowldge of, trees; rightly so because they are fantastic.
We will miss him, and just as he did, strive to continue to make good lives.

I'll be thinking of you all tomorrow. Thanks for sharing some of your dad with me, Jana. Much love and good energy from Montana.

Dear Judy and the whole Battin family. I have always treasured the times spent with all of you. Am sure you can remember the great fishing trips Dick and I had so many years ago. He never complained when he had to bring a sea sick Paulsen back across the bar at Westport, put him to bed in the camper and go back out fishing by himself. Lots of love to you all. Jerry Paulsen

I'm so sorry for your loss! As a friend of Rick's, a lifelong friend of Jana's and a 2001 roommate of Apryl's, I feel as if this family is a part of mine. To hear about this breaks my heart and I wish I could give you all a big hug right here and now. My thoughts are with you all. Take care of yourselves and please don't hesitate to get in touch if you need anything.....anything at all.

I am a friend of Rick's and have been fortunate enough to have met and spent some time with the entire Battin family. My experience with Dick was that of a thoughtful teacher, tireless worker and generous provider to his family and friends. My thoughts and prayers are with all of the Battin's.

My son Alex along with Dick and Judy's son Rick were good friends in high school and remain good friends today. We met Dick and Judy through our sons. Their property at Napavine was truly amazing. Alex spent quite a bit of time with Rick at Napavine and was very impressed with the Battins. The house that Dick and Judy built with lumber from their property was amazing.. Dick was an original "Ironman". Our condolences to Judy and the family.

Dick is the husband of my cousin Judy. I was fortunate to get to know Dick when I was stationed at NAS Whidbey Island. When we were not at sea I took every opportunity to visit Dick and Judy as well as other relatives in eastern Washington. What wonderful memories.

The many times we fished for salmon, hung around his workshop while he made shakes for their home out of some tree he pulled in, or having a few beers (and Judy's good cooking!). And later, our too few visits to Napavine enjoying their friendship, trees and home as construction progressed. Dick was truly a remarkable man who I have fond memories of, I will miss him.

Teresa and I give the Battins our love and prayers.

I helped Dick with the farm @ Grouse Hills by mowing & baling the timothy hay he planted for several years. He was always an inspiration to work with, such plans for his land! I was there before the house went up & he was just concerned about the land!! The trees, the careful attention to detail on every aspect of the development of the property. The ponds down below - lead us to the desire to have fish ponds of our own! The first time I was there, Dick, dirty & scruffy & not looking at all like a dentist said, " I want to show you something ". I got into the old VW with the Lab dog in the back seat breathing down my neck & Dick went into the garage & got a bag of ( something ) . Off we headed down & up & down the narrow road, driving like a mad man with tree branches & mud flying everywhere when Dick said " I forgot to tell you I have no brakes! " Didn't know what to expect at that point but the next thing I knew we pulled up beside a beautiful pond & he threw smelt in the water - the fish in the pond went crazy!!! It was hard to believe that a man that had been a dentist & lived in a large city could have such a love & understanding of the land. He will be missed greatly & our condolences go out to Judy & the family Dewey & Carolyn Blanksma
