SHERMAN DAVIS Obituary

Memorial Service for Superintendent Sherman Davis, Jr "Death is not the end - But the beginning of eternal life" Supt. Sherman Davis, after a long illness, passed away on Sunday, June 27, 2010 at the age of 79. The Memorial service will be held Saturday, July 3, 2010 at The COGIC Headquarters - 9201 Pacific Avenue - 11:00 am (viewing 9-11). He served as pastor of the Altheimer Memorial Church of God in Christ for 28 years. He grew up and received his formal education in Memphis, Tennessee. In 1952, while serving in the armed service as a Medical Corpsman, he was called to the ministry. He was ordained to the gospel ministry in 1954 by the late Bishop A.B. McEwen. Supt. Davis' passion in life was not to be successful but to be significant. He wanted to be remembered for his compassion, courage and desire to enrich the lives of others. In 1990, the Sherman Davis, Jr. Scholarship fund was organized in his honor. The young people of Altheimer Memorial Church have been the benefactors to encourage them to receive that first college degree. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 56 years, Curlie C. Davis, son Carl Davis (Harolyn), daughter Carol Clark (Dexter), brothers Alfred C. Davis, Sr. (Mary), Wylie Davis (Glenda), Sol DiaEze, Jeremiah Davis, 6 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, family and friends whose lives are richer because he lived. The family would like for contributions to be given to the SDJ Scholarship fund - Altheimer Memorial Church, 1121 Altheimer St, Tacoma WA 98405

Pastor Davis, it has been one year since you left us.Gone but Not Forgotten. Life loved you being a part of it, and we loved you being a part of our lives. God decided he needed you, so from this world you left. But you took a piece of all of us, our hearts are what you kept. You will always have a special place in our hearts. We know you're in Heaven, watching over us and looking after us.
We'll be missing you.

As I look at the comments left by saints from all over the country, it does my heart good to know that what you do for God does last forever. Both of my great uncles and my grandfather left Memphis doing the work of the Lord. Yet, there is a Davis left preaching and doing the work of the Lord. To come from a family with it's foundation firmly in Holiness is a blessing and not taken lightly. Supt. Davis, my grandfather, Supt. Harold Davis, and my great uncle Pastor Alfred Davis stood on the prayers of their mother and started a work here that I now carry on. I remind my children of who they are and those great individuals in our family who have sacrificed and lived a life pleasing in the eyesight of the Lord. Take your rest. You will be missed.

As Uncle Sherman's niece, I am a recipient of his teaching and what his wisdom, if you take heed, will do for your life. I couldn't be happier in both my natural and spiritual life at this season and I owe a LOT of that to my Uncle Sherman Davis Jr. I still miss him and often cry because I just want to talk to him, hug him, but I know where he is and I know he's in a better place. He was an incredible man and he meant the world to me.

Elder Davis will be greatly missed by the many lives he touched during his lifetime. When I met Elder Davis and Sister Davis, I found out what love really is. They drew me with their love and kindness at Bethel Church Of Church God In Christ, the small church on the hill. With only a few members and plenty of love and compassion. He always had time to listen, no matter how old or young. You were important to him. May God bless and keep you- Sister Davis, Carl, Lynn and Davis Family.

Pastor Sherman was my very first pastor as was my family his very first members at Bethel Temple located on Frank St., in Memphis, Tn. He was a great influence in my life and the lives of my family. Today, I believe, because of the seed planted in me at a young age by Pastor Sherman, my life is dedicated to serving Christ. We will continue to miss Pastor as we did the day you and your family left Lakeview COGIC to pursue God's calling. From the Hodges family, Mama Hodges, Wille, Frankie, me (John), Gwen and Shirley. Mother Davis (we called Sister Curley), Carl (still a good friend) and Lynn, our prayers and thoughts are for you in your time of celebrating the homegoing of such a great man as Pastor Davis.

I thank God for being under such a man. Hey was incredibly strong yet meek. He was not all puffed up at all. He held the title as Pastor not to be paraded nor esteemed, but to be a servant to God's flock. Pastor Davis was in tune with God's spirit and he understood the move of God. I will always love him for teaching truth and for being an example of Jesus Christ... Derek "DC" Clark

The Banks family salutes the legacy and memory of Superintendent Sherman Davis, Jr. We thank God for his willingness to let the image of Christ shine through him. I remember one Easter Sunday at Lakeview that he encouraged the saints to not buy new clothes, but to celebrate Easter for its true meaning. He wore overalls and walked to church from his home which was a very far distant. What a glorious Easter Sunday that was! Through the Word of God,by precepts and examples, Pastor Davis was a genuine soul winner and molder. He allowed me to teach Sunday School at the age of 13, now I'm the Dean of Christian Education. We were very poor people at Lakeview, but Elder Davis and his wife introduced us to the finer, cultural things of life. I thank God for placing Elder and Sister Davis into our lives. Because of them, I am a blessed woman today. I shall miss him very much, so I light the candle in memory of all he meant to me.

Our heartfelt sympathy to the Davis Family: What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch. You may not understand why Pastor Davis left this earth, or why he left before you were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, you will begin to remember not just that he died, but that he lived. And that his life gave you memories too beautiful to forget. We will cherish the memories of the times we spent with Pastor Davis and his family at Lakeview Revival Center in Memphis. We are with you during this time of grief.
