Shirley Getzin Obituary

On September 10, 2025, Shirley Mae Getzin passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by family, love, and music.

Born August 3, 1937, in Sauk City, Wisconsin, to Christian and Charlotte Bertelsen, Shirley grew up in Madison and later studied nursing at the University of Wisconsin, becoming an LPN. There she met the love of her life, Dr. Louis W. Getzin. Married on September 14, 1957, they built a beautiful life filled with love, music, learning, and shared passions.

Together, Shirley and Louis embraced classical music, the arts, gourmet cooking, horticulture, and philanthropy. Their home radiated warmth, curiosity, and welcome.

A devoted community member, Shirley supported many organizations including the Junior Women's Club, American Field Service, The Rose Society of Pierce County, P.E.O., Planned Parenthood, and Valley Theater of the Arts. She also served on the board of Good Samaritan Hospital and raised awareness for cancer research.

Her greatest joy was the Tacoma Youth Symphony, where her leadership and love of music led her to become Executive Director. She guided countless young musicians, traveling internationally with the orchestra and ensuring each experience was unforgettable.

Shirley's proudest legacy is her family. She is survived by her children: Daniel (Wendy), Victoria (Robert), Christian (Kathy), and Carlotta; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; her sister Darlene (Lowell) Coulson; niece Nanette Sanchez; and nephew Scott Coulson. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Louis.

A Celebration of Life will be held at her home on September 28th at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation, or Tacoma Youth Symphony.

Shirley will be remembered for her boundless energy, generous spirit, and joyful optimism. In her own words, she leaves us "a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck."

I had the privilege of working with Shirley as a board member of the Puyallup Food Bank many years ago. She was instrumental in helping revamp the good bank by-laws. I admired her spunk and smarts.
