ALICE CLEMENTINE BAZE ORTH

ALICE ORTH Obituary

Smith Funeral Home LTD and Crematory

Alice Clementine Baze Orth began her active life on November 11, 1921, in Caldwell, Idaho. She was the second of eight children born to Charles Albert (Bert) and Mabel Lucille Baze. She attended Outlook Elementary School and graduated from Sunnyside High School. As an athletic young woman, she enjoyed gymnastics, loved to swim, rode as a jockey in Bickleton and Ellensburg horse races and played baseball while employed at Boeing during World War II.

Alice's work career also included bookkeeping, serving as a reporter for the Sunnyside Sun, 27 years as a dental assistant for Earl Ledingham and 10 years as a clerk for Walker's Hardware.

After she married the love of her life, Walter John Orth, they enjoyed camping, fishing, dancing, playing cards, serving our Lord Jesus Christ together at the then Outlook Church of the Brethren, attending local sports events, as well as hosting numerous dinners for large groups of friends and relatives.

Her exceptional service as a volunteer was exhibited in 18 years as a Cub Scout den mother. The Boy Scouts of America acknowledged this service by awarding her the highest Scouting award given to a woman, the Silver Fawn Award. For years, Alice also faithfully shared her time and talents as a youth camp counselor at Camp Koinonia, Sunday School teacher, deaconess, church clerk, choir participant, children's club leader, 23-year supporter of Outlook PTA and Booster Club, and member of the Outlook Grange. She loved visiting with lifelong friends at Jr. Indelook Club, TOPS and Monday morning coffee club gatherings. Her delightful poems and creative craft projects brought smiles to many faces.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Walt Orth; her parents, Bert and Mabel Baze; and her brothers, Melvin, Earl and Kenny Baze.

She is tremendously loved and missed already by the family members who remain: her 6 children: Melody (Bill) Allen of Sunnyside, WA; Dr. Richard (Judy) Orth of Estacada, Oregon; Terry (Sherry) Orth of Tieton, WA; James (Frances) Orth of Benton City, WA; Barry (Karen) Orth of Benton City, WA; and Scott (Danette) Orth of Daleville, Alabama; 18 grandchildren: Trey (Laura) Allen, Lance (Jodi) Allen, Dr. Matthew (Liz) Orth, Dr. Brian (Andra) Orth, Rebecca (Steve) Scott, Erin (Braden) Hamilton, Kristen (Zach) Hursh, Tiffany Orth, T. I go way back with Alice. I was married to Dick Chambers and his family was friends of the Baze's'. Horse racing was the reason for the friendship. Alice was a kind, caring friend. Her smile was a trademark. I have wonderful memories of her and her husband, Walt and their family. RIP Alice.

The life of Alice and her family growing up was a part of my husband, Dick, and his family way before Walt was a part of her life. The Baze"s and Chambers had a lot in common with the horse races at Longacres in Renton, Wa. After Walt and Alice were married , my husband and I enjoyed being with Alice and Walt and their family camping. Alice always had a smile on her face and didn"t have a unkind word to say about anybody. What a sweetheart. Our family extend our prayers to the family and know we care.
