Galen Winsor Obituary

June 4, 1926 to July 19. 2008

Einan's Funeral Home

On July 19, 2008, Galen Hulet Winsor went peacefully from his mortal life to return to his Father in Heaven, there to be reunited with his eternal companion, LaDene Mikkelsen Winsor, who preceded him in death 15 years earlier.

Born June 4th 1926, in Peterson, Morgan County, Utah, he was the third child and first son of Murkins Terry Winsor and Eleanor Hulet.

His father died when he was three years old. His mother later remarried to Josiah Adair, who was a lifelong friend of Murkins. The family moved to Pioche, and then Panaca, Nevada.

He graduated from Lincoln County High School in 1944 and joined the Navy that September. He served a tour in the South Pacific and was a radio operator on Guam where he was wounded by a sniper.

After leaving the service, he attended Brigham Young University in Provo, UT, where he graduated with a degree in chemistry. There he met LaDene and they were married in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on August 29, 1947.

They moved to Richland, WA, in August of 1950 where he worked for General Electric at Hanford as a Nuclear Chemist. He helped build and run processes involving extracting Plutonium. He also served as a missionary in the Northern States Mission during this time.

Four children were born in Richland, Scott, Lane, Gayla and Todd.

In December 1964, the family moved to San Jose, CA, where Galen was involved in designing a commercial nuclear fuel reprocessing plant.

Galen was active in the church Scouting program in both WA and CA. In May of 1969, he moved to Joliet, IL, where the Midwest Fuel Recovery Plant was built. Galen was the first bishop of the Joliet Ward, Chicago South Stake and was involved in building a beautiful chapel there.

GE then had Galen manage a uranium ore facility in Nucla, CO. Galen accepted a job with United Nuclear in October 1976 and moved back to Richland.

He has had many jobs and projects that promoted and advocated nuclear energy even after retiring.

Galen loved flying, fishing, hunting, boating and reading. He lived a full and productive life with a great love for his family and church.

He is survived by his second wife, Ruby Van Sant, who lives in Canada; his son, Scott Winsor and his wife, Kathryn; son, Lane Winsor; daughter, Gayla Winsor; and son, Todd Winsor. He also has nine grandchildren and three (very soon to be four) great-grandchildren.

So, we say farewell to a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 24th, 2008, at 10 a.m. in the Thayer Chapel, 1720 Thayer Drive, Richland, WA.

Interment will follow at the Sunset Memorial Gardens, 915 by-pass highway, Richland.

The world lost a real one. Someone who stood for truth and did his best to enlighten the common people that clean safe abundant energy was and is possible. One-day I hope it becomes reality.

Yes, I agree with Mr.Romanelli in the comments below. All I can say is he, and those like him, truly could have changed this planet equal too or greater than Nikola Tesla. If I ever make it back to Washington in my life, I would like to stop by his grave to show some gratitude for all the enlightenment he has provided to a layman as my self in the function & reality of Radio-isotopic Matter and its nuclear energy.
May his story not be forgotten!

Dr Winsor was a maverick in the field of nuclear science, and furthered the knowledge of said field. He has enlightened me on so much about this topic. He will be sorely missed. My deepest condolences to his extended family, and many, many friends whose lives he has touched.
May the good Lord bless, and keep you Dr Galen Winsor{
