Gary Lee McKean
April 14, 1938 - February 3, 2022
Kennewick, Washington - Retired landscape company owner, Gary Lee McKean, 83, died peaceably Wednesday, February 2, in a Kennewick, Washington, care center. He suffered from Lewy body dementia the past few years.
Rosary service is set for noon Thursday, February 10 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church followed by Mass at 1 p.m. Burial will be at Desert Lawn Memorial Park next to McKean's late wife, Irmgard, who passed away exactly three years before him.
McKean was born April 14, 1938, in Mount Vernon, Washington. He grew up on a dairy farm of his parents, Felix and Judith Marie McKean, in Stanwood, Washington. As a youngster, McKean milked cows, trapped muskrats, and drove truck during hay and pea harvest.
After high school he joined the U.S. Army. While a soldier in Germany, he met and married Irmgard Kern in Munich, May 5, 1959. They are survived by son, Bruce McKean of Gig Harbor, Washington, and daughter, Tanya McKean of Carlton, Oregon, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
After his military duty, McKean and his wife lived a few years in western Washington before moving to Kennewick in the 1960s. He worked as a truck driver to support construction of dams near the Tri-Cities. He then worked for Loftus Landscaping before starting his own McKean Landscaping business.
Upon retirement, the McKean's traveled the country in their motor home and spent several winters in Yuma, Arizona.
