Howard Skavdahl Obituary

Howard Kirby Skavdahl

March 25, 1953 - October 15, 2024

Sun Valley, Idaho - Howard Kirby Skavdahl was received into the arms of his loving Savior, Jesus Christ on October 15th, 2024. He lived a life reflecting the reality he was a child of God who consistently sought to love God and love others well.

Born in Santa Monica, California, his family moved to Lake Forest Park, Washington where his father worked as an aeronautical engineer with Boeing. Kirby developed a love of flying early and obtained his pilot's license before he graduated high school. The joy of flying would be a defining theme in his life through which he learned who he was, who God was and provided a way to serve others.

He graduated from Washington State University, then University of Washington Dental School. He spent 2 years in Virginia completing training in periodontics before moving back to the Northwest. He and his wife, Connie, settled in Tri-Cities where Kirby built and maintained a periodontal practice. Periodontics was his passion and each one of his patients knew it. He practiced with excellence, showing compassion to his patients and performing his skill with a precision that resulted in superior outcomes. He was also passionate about improving the level of periodontal care throughout our nation and was actively involved in the SPEAR study group committed to academic excellence in dental care. He practiced periodontics for a total of 42 years with the goal of showing Christ's love to his patients by providing the highest level of care possible.

Amidst his highly successful professional career, Kirby also knew how to play hard. While he had many hobbies, his principal joy was skiing. Through many snowstorms and icy roads he made sure his family was in the mountains, tearing up the slopes, almost every weekend. It brought him more joy than any of his professional accomplishments that he taught each of his children and all nine grandchildren how to ski. This reflected his deep love for his family which came before all his professional and personal endeavors.

Kirby married Connie in 1977 and was "the best husband [she] could ever ask for" for 47 years. Throughout their marriage he loved her with tenderness and was always finding ways to spend time with her doing the activities she most enjoyed. Two of their favorites were cross-country skiing and hiking the beautiful trails in the Wood River Valley. Together they had 3 children who were deeply loved and who all had close relationships with their father. One of the things Kirby said before he died was that he never felt more connected to God than when raising his family. That was reflected in how he parented his children not just encouraging their various activities, but enthusiastically joining them in those activities. Whether it was figure-skating, throwing a baseball, building a BMX ramp or working through a complicated trigonometry problem he was right there with them.

Above all, Kirby loved Jesus. He never lost his first love and humbly recognized that all that he did flowed from the love of Christ. To his final day he demonstrated that he was at complete peace with God because of Jesus Christ. All that he did was life-giving because he found his source of life in Christ. We praise God that he is wholly united with that eternal source of love today.

A memorial service will be held at Crossview Church in Kennewick, WA on October 26 at 11:00 a.m.

I'm so very sorry to hear of Kirby's passing. He was my periodontist for many many years. He was very talented and kind. I was sad for me and his patients when he retired, but happy for him to be able to spend time with his family and doing what he loved. He will be missed.

I just found out about my gym friend, Kirby and I am honestly heartbroken.
I met Kirby after moving to Tri Cities and joining Kia Ora Fitness about 16 -17 yrs
ago. We were consistent RPM and Body Pump friends. I recall the day he told me had retired and since we are same age he encouraged me to start thinking about it. Of course, didn't see him as often after he started enjoying his retirement in Sun Valley ID but we would catch up when he did have an evening at Kia Ora when he was home.
My absolute heart-felt condolences for his beautiful family at this most difficult time. He was so proud of them.
You will certainly be missed my friend

Dear Skavdahl family,
How do you sum up 53 years of such close friendship? I think we shared almost everything you possibly could. Skiing, golfing, traveling, family get togethers, feeding each other`s small kids in their high chairs, And even singing off key together - I always think of both of us bellowling out Rocket Man in our fraternity room. And especially in the last several years attending some church services together, and praying with one another. What a wonderful testimony and display Kirby always gave for his love fir his family and for Jesus! Connie, you´ll always be like a sister to Cathy and I and kids just as our nieces and nephews. We love you all and our heart breaks with yours, but I am so confident of seeing him again that we also shed tears of joy.

Connie, David, Mark, and Lisa,

Kirby once flew Bruce Einsphar and I to Moscow, Idaho to play a round of golf. A special day for sure that I will always remember. Kirby was always one I wanted to talk to after church on Sundays because of our shared love for skiing.... Both on snow and on water. We had both experienced back issues that prevented us from enjoying those sports from time to time. His giant smile as he told skiing stories pretty much said it all. He was also very interested in how I was doing, and if I had been skiing. He is a great man who will be missed my many.

Kirby, dear fraternity brother and classmate, I can still feel the enormous shadow of your spirit, look back into your broad smile, walk with you along the same pathways, and share vibrant autumn days that we took in together. You were smarter, admirably more charming, and a guy I to whom I looked up. I saw her first, however, on the same day, in the same biology class, and I said so! You were having none of it, and you made the best decision of your life in following up with an impossibly lovely young woman who became your wife. My jealousy was surpassed by the happiness I felt for you, and I soon began to see you and Connie as a couple. But I saw her first! Though we never again saw each other, you took a little bit of me with you just as I took a little bit of you. That's what brotherhood is about. Rest. It will be a great joy to see you again someday. All my love to you, to Connie, and to all who remember you fondly. --Terry Pennell, WSU '75

On my first visit to Dr Skavdahl he interrupted my appointment to visit his three year old daughter who showed up wearing every piece of jewelry that mom could have purchased in a vending machine. She was so proud of herself and he was telling her how beautiful she looked. I knew then he was a guy who could be my periodontist. I´m sorry to read about his passing but what a great guy

I'm so sorry to learn of Kirby's passing. I knew Kirby and Connie first while
playing golf with them and later by becoming a patient of Kirby for over a
year. My first appointment happened to be on March 25th and I started
my appointment by complaining that that was how I was spending my
birthday. Kirby laughed and said it was his birthday too! My sympathies to
Connie and family. Kirby will be deeply missed for his kindness, his gentleness as a dentist and just an all around good guy.
