RICHARD TRAVIS Obituary


Brown Funeral Home

Dr. Richard D. Travis, Ph.D., 82, of Carbide Road in Plattsburgh, N.Y., passed away on Sunday, August 12, 2012, at his home with family by his side. He was born on April 8, 1930, in Wenatchee, WA, the son of the late Lester and Clara (Mehl) Travis.

Richard served in the U.S. Navy and retired in 1967 after 21 years of service as a calibrations officer. After he retired, he spent two as a Peace Corps volunteer in Malaysia. He graduated from Colorado State University with a Master's Degree and earned his two Ph.D. degrees from Ohio State University in Electronics and Education. He later retired from the United Nations as the administrator of a vocational school in Seoul, South Korea. He was lifetime member and former Grand Master of the Masonic Lodge and was an active Shriner in Pasco, WA. Community service was very important to him.

He is survived by his wife, Josephine "Jo Ann" Travis; a daughter and son-in-law, Diana R. and Roger W. Murray of Plattsburgh; a brother, Pat Travis of Washington state; his grandchildren, Caren and Brian Laundree of Keeseville; Kendra and Chad Orton of Finksburg, MD; 5 great-grandchildren; Patrick, Tristan, Brielle, Emily and Sarah; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant son, Terry E. Travis; a granddaughter, Kathryne A. Murray; a brother, Tom T. Travis; and a sister, Susan Hoppas.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no calling hours. Services will be held privately for the family. Entombment will be in Whispering Maples Mausoleum in Plattsburgh. Memorial donations may be offered to Hospice of the North Country. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad St., Plattsburgh, NY 12901. (518) 561-3980.
