Avtar Singh Dhami

1949 - 2024

Sardar Avtar Singh Dhami passed away on Monday, July 29, 2024. Dhami was the beloved husband of nearly 45 years to Davinder Kaur Dhami. He was the eldest and only son of Karam Singh Dhami and Prakash Kaur Bains. He was born in 1949 in Piplanwala Village, Hoshiarpur District in Punjab, India. At age 19, Dhami served in the Air Force of India from 1968 to 1971.

In 1978, Dhami immigrated to the San Francisco Bay Area and entered the truck driving industry. He found sanctuary in his truck, a place of solace and comfort, and where his spirit roamed free in a sacred space of his own.

In 1979, Dhami married a woman he fell in love with at first sight, Davinder Kaur. They drove trucks together and established the first online website offering Punjabi translations of the Sikh Holy Scriptures, the Guru Granth Sahib.

Dhami was an instrumental trailblazer in the Sikh community. He served as President of the Fremont Sikh Gurdwara from 1996 to 1998. In 2004, he published a thousand copies of a book written by the first Asian, first Punjabi first Sikh Congressman, Dalip Singh Saund.

In addition to his wife Davinder, Dhami is survived by his loving children, Sukhjeet, Daljit and her husband Anuj Soni, Kirpal and her husband Karamveer Dhesi, and Aman and her husband Navroop Judge. He also leaves behind his six adoring grandchildren Ayana, Kavleen, Avani, Savina, Sajjan and Sahej.
