Cecile Grandjean Obituary

Cecile Grandjean
Honesdale - Cecile Frances Grandjean died early Sunday morning May 23, 2021 at the age of 95. She died peacefully at home surrounded by her family. Born February 7, 1926 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, daughter of the late Cecil Shannon Lynch and Frances Gove Lynch. She graduated from Pine Bluff High School and attended Texas State College for Women in Denton, Texas. She graduated from the University of Missouri earning her Bachelors in Home Economics.
She was preceded in death by her husband John James Grandjean whom she called Jim. She stated that her two children were among her greatest accomplishments. Bruce Lynch Grandjean and Patricia Jean Crandall, both of whom live in Honesdale, PA.
Before moving to Honesdale in 1990, Ceil lived in San Diego, CA for 37 years. She raised her family and taught adult ed classes in Home Economics concentrating on sewing and embroidery.
She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Honesdale for many years and most recently the Bethany Presbyterian Church.
In 1991, Ceil was awarded the Public Education Partners and Promoters Educators Award for service to youth and the education profession, for her incredible assistance in modernizing the Stourbridge School library. Her task was to enter about 15,000 books into a new computer system database. She later volunteered with the Wayne Pike Adult Literacy Program and helped many adults achieve their GEDs, she volunteered with Hospital Auxiliary and the Red Cross. When she heard about a Senior Surfing course at the Wayne County Public Library, she began teaching senior citizens computer skills. Ceil continued with her volunteer efforts well into her 80's.
Small town life held a special appeal to Ceil and she was very pleased in 2001 when she was recognized for her outstanding service to the community. She received the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce Community Achievement Award.
Her hands were rarely idle as she enjoyed the knitting and crocheting she learned as a child. She gave away many hand-made baby sweaters and booties to new mothers and grandmothers and she was famous for her crocheted cotton potholders. In later years, she discovered a form of sewing machine embroidery that combined her love of embroidery and the computer. This opened up a new world to her as she explored the internet sites for new designs and met many new e-mail friends that shared her love of the art. She created many beautiful gifts for family and friends.
In addition to her two children, she will be greatly missed by her daughter-in-law Kathy Grandjean and her six grandchildren: SJ Crandall and his wife Gretchen, Kevin Crandall and his wife Kathryn, Kelly Johnson and her husband Kris, Brian Grandjean and his wife Stephanie, Christy Rothwell and her husband Steve, Mark Grandjean and his wife Ali, and her 15 great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service and reception will be held at the Bethany Presbyterian Church, 431 Wayne Street Bethany, PA on Sunday June 6, 2021 at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Wayne County Public Library, 1406 North Main St, Honesdale, PA 18431 or the Dessin Animal Shelter, 138 Miller Dr. Honesdale, PA 18431.
