Mildred Ulmer Obituary

Mildred S. Ulmer, 86, of South Canaan, died suddenly at home Wednesday evening. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Gilbert J. Smith, in 1955 and by her second husband, Kenneth S. Ulmer, in 1983.

Born in Glen Ridge, NJ, daughter of the late Ruben and Mildred Muta Berggren, she was a graduate of Henry B. Whitehorne High School in Verona, NJ, and Booth Secretarial School in Bloomfield, NJ.

After moving to Pennsylvania in 1956, she was engaged in dairy farming in South Canaan for many years and was a bookkeeper for Bruno Silvestri, C.P.A., Honesdale, from 1972 to 1982. In prior years she was a 4-H leader and was active in the South Canaan PTA, the Hope Grange in Gravity and was a member of the Western Wayne School Board for several years. She enjoyed cooking and baking and was an avid reader. She also loved all kinds of animals, especially her dogs and cats, and was a strong supporter of several animal welfare groups including Dessin Animal Shelter, Best Friends ASPCA and The Elephant Sanctuary. For many years she attended the South Canaan Bible Protestant Church and the South Canaan Free Methodist Church.

She is survived by a son, Kenneth W. Ulmer, South Canaan; two daughters, Holly Samson and husband Erik A. Samson, Lake Ariel and Celeste Ulmer, South Canaan; two grandchildren, one great grandson, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was also predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth Noble-Kluge.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. from the Jenkins Funeral Home, 269 Belmont St., Waymart, conducted by the Rev. Rand Kizer, pastor of the South Clinton Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dessin Animal Shelter, 138 Miller Dr., Honesdale 18431.
