BERTHA SMART Obituary

BERTHA LAVON SMART Bertha LaVon Smart, 91 passed away September 20, 2025 at Parkwood Village in Pratt. LaVon was born March 16, 1934 on a farm near Trousdale, in Edwards County Kansas. Daughter of Oathel and Bertha (Brown) Monaghan. LaVon graduated from Trousdale High School in 1952 where she played basketball and was a cheerleader. She was a lifetime resident of Trousdale, Sawyer and Pratt communities. On December 13, 1975 LaVon married Gene Smart, a farmer, of Sawyer. Gene & LaVon enjoyed square dancing as Gene would call the dances. Gene and LaVon retired from farming in 1990 and moved to Pratt. Gene passed away January 7, 1992. After Gene's death LaVon did more volunteering and took up her cross-stitch, making many items for family and friends. She loved to ride horses she was a member of the Pratt Saddle Club and would host trail rides and hot dog roasts on the old Monaghan farm on the Rattlesnake Creek. LaVon was able to take numerous trips throughout the United States with family and friends. Memorable trips were to Shell Knob, Missouri with Sister-in-law Norene to see her aunt Gladys Hendricks and they would enjoy the sights and sounds of Branson. LaVon was interested in her family heritage, she even traveled to Ireland to see where the Monaghan ancestors were from. LaVon worked at the 1st National Bank in Pratt. She enjoyed her position as the drive thru teller. She retired in 2003 after 45 years. LaVon enjoyed her volunteer work. She did at Pratt Regional Medical Center auxiliary, RSVP, Red Cross Bloodmobile and South Wind Hospice thrift Shop. LaVon enjoyed her nieces & nephews. She traveled to many many horseshows, ballgames and other activities they were involved in. LaVon is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gene; brother, LeRoy Monaghan; and sister-in-law, Norene Monaghan. LaVon is survived by 3 Step Children; Jim (Cynthia) Smart, Helen(Lynn) McLaughlin, Marjorie(Abe) Lobdell; 2 Nephews, Glenn (Ronda) Monaghan and Marvin Monaghan; Niece, Cheryl (Keith) Brown; 6 Great nieces, Glenna (Nyle) Reinert, Kyla (Devin) McDonald, Jessica (Gary) Petty, Randa (Ryan) Nett, Tracy (Ben) Wheaton and Jolene Monaghan; 3 Great Nephews, Damon (Chelsea) Brown, Colter (Sydney) Brown, and Jared Monaghan; 7 Great-Great Nieces; Kaleigh and Whitley Reinert, Annabelle and Emmalyn Nett, Gracen and Ada Petty and Josephine Brown; 8 Great-Great Nephews; Creighton, Boone, Bodie and Booker McDonald, Luke and Eli Petty, Thatcher Nett and Milo Brown. Visitation will be Wednesday, September 24, 2025 from 9:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. with family present 5-7 at Larrison Mortuary. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 25, 2025 at Larrison Mortuary, 300 Country Club Road, Pratt, with Pastor Teresa Wynn presiding. Interment will follow at Fellsburg Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Pratt Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, Lemon Park Christmas Lights or donors Choice.
