I am just now finding this obituary 10 years later. I am sorry for your loss and spent a lot of time while I was growing up at 353 5th Avenue. I still wish I could stop in there once in awhile when I visit my parents. Marlene Herbert was a salt of the earth kind of person- easygoing in the best way. All of you Herbert's live in my heart.

To say that it has been difficult for me for to figure out exactly what to write here, would be a vast understatement. In my mind, Grandma was always a strong-willed and determined woman who couldn't be stopped when she knew what she wanted. She was an inspiration in the truth that you can accomplish almost anything if you put your mind to it. And she was just as devoted with family; she never forgot to send me and my kids holiday cards every year. She may not have gotten to see her great grandchildren (Brent and Nick) as much as I would've wanted, but they got to know her and she'll always be in our hearts and in many fond memories.

To the Family of Marlene,
Many years ago (early 60's) I worked with Marlene at the Old Leonard Hospital and later married her cousin, Jack McCabe Jr. I know I have met most of you over time but did not have the opportunity to get to know you very well. It saddens me that with the passing of, what I consider the adult, family members (Ralph, Uncle Bobby, Eva, Hazel and Helen we tend to loose contact with each other. Their generation was the glue that held us all together.
My sympathy to all of you for your loss, but know your love and memories of Marlene will help you through this time.

I have so many wonderful memories of my Aunt Marlene. I was so blessed to have grown up in such a close family and having such a wonderful person as an aunt. She was always so out going, strong and caring. Always there when you needed her I wish my daughter Emily had a chance to have known her better. I love you Aunt Marlene and am so sad you are no longer with us you will always hold a special place in my heart. Chuck, Kevin, Cathy, and Kristin I love you and thinking about you

To me she was Aunt Marlene and my Godmother. I have so many wonderful memories of her during my childhood growing up in Troy. It was a time when our families all lived close by and were together for every holiday and every important life event.
That period of my life was a gift. It was a time and experience that many of us struggle to give to our own families now. But it is the vivid and wonderful memories of family members like Aunt Marlene, Uncle Bill and of course, Grandma Catherine and Grandpa Ralph that for me, keeps me searching for ways to provide that same gift of family to my daughter Mary. With our families now geographically separated, it is more difficult to capture the same magic I experienced but I will not stop trying.
Recently I was watching some old home movies of me as a baby in front of Grandma Catherine's house on 5th avenue, next to Sam's barbershop. There were Chuck, Kevin, Cathy, Aunt Marlene, and Uncle Bill pushing me around in a girls toy baby carriage. I think they even put a bow in my hair. My wife and daughter got a kick out of that. So did I.
I last saw Aunt Marlene a few years ago in North Carolina while my Dad was in the hospital. Aunt Marlene was there helping Mom and Dad through a tough time, just like you would expect from a supportive member of a close family. Despite the stressful circumstances, Aunt Marlene was solid as rock and a Godsend in the way she helped out. She was the same old Aunt Marlene - smart, outgoing, and funny as hell. She reminisced about Uncle Bill, her kids and the amazing memories she had traveling the country with her family each and every summer. We talked about the good old times we all had growing up in Troy. And, despite the painful circumstances my parents were experiencing at the time, Aunt Marlene had us all smiling/laughing at her stories, which of course were very detailed and loooong. ;-)
I regret not talking to her while she was ill but I am grateful for that time I spent with her in North Carolina. She was a wonderful, loving person and she will always have a special place in the memories of my life.
My deepest sympathies to everyone.
All my best and God bless,
Wally III
