Ann Iveson Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Ann K. Iveson, who left us peacefully on June 22, 2024. Ann was born in Wethersfield, CT on January 19, 1935. She will be remembered for her positive attitude and bright smile, strength of character, colorful fashions, beautiful hair, and her remarkable ability to connect with others. Ann was also an exceptional gardener, particularly skilled in growing roses and orchids. She was fluent in Polish and a fantastic cook—but she is best known as a phenomenal cellist.

Ann was first in her family to graduate from college, a testament to her determination and dedication. Despite starting cello relatively late at age 14, she earned a scholarship and was accepted into the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford, where she graduated summa cum laude. It was at Hartt that she met her husband, Bill Iveson. They were married on June 23, 1956 and shared many happy decades together, until Bill's passing at age 90 in 2022.

In 1959, Ann joined Bill in Tucson, where she became Principal Cellist with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra (TSO), a position she held for many years. During her illustrious musical career, she performed on stage with stars like Ray Charles, Jimmy Dean, and Rod Stewart. Simultaneously, she was a beloved and award winning orchestra teacher for 39 years with Tucson Unified School District (TUSD). In addition to teaching private cello lessons, Ann also performed with the Flagstaff Festival Orchestra, Arizona Opera, and Tucson Pops Orchestra.

Ann earned her master's degree in cello performance from the University of Arizona. She became active in TUSD's Opening Minds through the Arts (OMA) which uses fine arts to teach skills in math, science, writing, and other subjects. Her contributions to our musical community were recognized in 2013 when she was inducted into the Tucson Musicians Museum.

A keen observer and lifelong learner, Ann stayed active by exercising regularly and attending local musical performances. She enjoyed visiting Poland and teaching in China. Most recently, she saw her idol, concert cellist Yo-Yo Ma, with her daughters Kathleen and Brenda.

Donations in Ann's honor can be made to TSO or OMA.

Ann is survived by her children Tom (Stacy) and Kathleen (Brenda Kazen) and her grandson Jared. We will lay Ann to rest with Bill in a private family memorial.

Ann's legacy of love, music, and passion for life will continue to inspire us. She will be deeply missed. Love you, Mom.

I have a beautiful memory of Mrs. Anna, when I sat on the ground next to her chair in the garden of her son Tom's house and we talked about music and sometimes even used a few phrases in Polish. I will also never forget the touching farewell with Anna and Bill after a dinner together before my departure from the States. Condolences to the bereaved from Ivo of the Czech Republic

To Kathleen, Tom, and all of Ann's family- I'm so sorry to learn of your mom's passing. She was a wonderful teacher and lady! I met her when I was 9. Mrs. Iveson taught me to play cello and was my teacher for 5 years at Hudlow, then Fickett. She was always patient, kind and had a twinkle in her eye. It was thrilling to see her on stage with the TSO as Principal cellist. She impacted so many lives through her teaching and I'm grateful to have been one of her lucky students. You'll remain in my heart and prayers as you grieve the loss of this dear woman.

Mrs. I´veson was my cello teacher at Hudson Elementary 1963-66. She was so patient! Never a harsh word or sign of frustration with all those little kids who in all honesty were pretty terrible musicians, but grew to love music anyway. Mr. Iveson was my concert choir teacher at Sahuaro HS. Those two people had a lasting effect on me. I´m so sorry for your loss.

I first met Ann in 1952 at the start of my second year as an undergrad at Hartt when she began her degree program. We soon became friends and played together in many orchestras, ensembles, and outside 'gigs'. I especially remember our performance of the Trout Quintet ....and Ann's ability to improvise when we were playing those 'gigs', she was amazing.
Ann, Bill and I remained friends after the Hartt years, enjoyed staying in touch and occasionally visiting each other (with me in Halifax, NS, and with them in Tucson). They were a special pair, and will continue to be sorely missed.
My sincere condolences to all the family.
Sincerely,
Ninette Babineau, Halifax, NS
