Ann STEIN Obituary

STEIN, Ann Annette (Annie) died peacefully at age 90 on August 25, 2017. She was born in Brooklyn, NY on November 5, 1926 and raised in Brooklyn and Coney Island, where her family owned a candy store. She attended public schools in Brooklyn and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School, where she excelled in drama.  In 1946, she married Leo Stein and they moved to Tucson with her immediate family to begin a new life. She and Leo raised three sons—Alan, William and Kenneth—and Annie thrived as a homemaker and involved parent, cooking, baking, and cheering her children on. She also served as a volunteer at Tucson Medical Center, the Beacon Foundation, and Handmaker.  In 1971, she began work as a cashier at the Associated Students of the University of Arizona Bookstore, where she was a beloved employee for over 35 years. She interacted with thousands of students, faculty and staff, sharing book recommendations, restaurant suggestions, and serving as a promoter of the UofA. She retired in 2006 at age 80. She loved her family, a good book, the theater, movies, and was a passionate fan of UofA basketball. She was competitive, and strong-willed.  We will all remember her with love and affection. She was pre-deceased by her beloved husband, Leo Stein; her parents, Hyman and Rose Giteck; her daughter-in-law, Linda Manuel Stein; her brothers, her sister, her niece, and a grandniece and nephew. She is survived by her sons, Alan (Terry Holpert), William and Kenneth (Nancy Russert); her grandchildren, Benjamin Stein (Anne-Marie), David Stein (Rebecca Popuch), Elizabeth Stein Cohen (Evan) and Sarah Stein; her delightful great- grandchildren, Max, Naomi and Emmy Stein and Emilia Cohen; several nieces, nephews and longtime friends. We thank Dr. Steven Wool and his staff for their expert and compassionate care over many years, and the staffs of The Forum Ambassador and Skilled Nursing Units and Peppi's House for their kindness and care. Graveside Services will be held at Evergreen Cemetery, Anshei Israel section on Sunday, August 27, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. For those wishing to honor Annie, consider a contribution to the Ann Stein Scholarship for UA Bookstore Employees at the UA Foundation, 1111 N. Ann Stein was a fixture in the lives of my two sisters and I from our earliest days as kids growing up in Tucson. We would see each other almost every day as our Mom shopped at The Fort Lowell Market which she owned with Leo and the Amster family. I still think of her and Leo every day as I pass by the building ( now a carpet store ) on Ft Lowell Road and can almost hear that old cash register ringing up our sale.
Ann was so kind and very very fun to know. She helped me as a college student in the UofA Bookstore. I always managed to get the text book I needed with her assistance!
Always so friendly and vivacious. She sparkled when ever she spoke.
Regards to the family who definitely had a great Mom and grandma.
