Barbara MERRILL Obituary

MERRILL, Barbara Kathryn Pritchard born on election day November 6, 1934 in Cleveland, Ohio, and current resident of Tucson Arizona, died June 27, 2017. Her parents were Kathryn Walling Pritchard and David James Pritchard. She grew up in Lyndhurst, Ohio, graduating from Charles F. Brush High School, where in her senior year was bestowed the honor of Homecoming Queen. Barbara graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University and was an active member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. It was there she met her now deceased husband, John Brooks Merrill. She lived in Albion, New York for many years with her husband who was with the family funeral business, Merrill-Grinnell Inc.  While in Albion she taught in elementary school in the Albion School System, and then served as the librarian after achieving her Master of Library Science Degree, from the University of Buffalo. She was an exceptionally devoted, loving and supportive wife, mother and sister, who saved her brother Phil's life on at least one occasion in his youth. After her husband retired from the funeral business, they moved to Tucson, Arizona.  She was an avid bridge player and a very active member of two retirement communities, Sun City Vistoso and Brookdale Santa Catalina, including serving as the librarian in Brookdale for many years before she passed. She was past president of the Sun City Vistoso Genealogical Society and very active in historical and genealogy research. She is survived by two sons, James and Mark Merrill; brother, Philip Pritchard; grandchildren, Hayley and Luke Merrill; niece, Elise Dekoschak and several cousins. Friends and family are invited to attend Memorial Services to be held on Thursday, July 6, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, 7650 N. Paseo del Norte Tucson, AZ 85704, (520) 297-7201. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel.

Dear friend and neighbor. We shall miss her. I just learned of her death and send regards to her children and family members. Barb, myself, Nancy Strom and Judy Clark often had lunch together. When she and John lived on Desert Rock we often got together at neighborhood parties. She and John contributed much to our community.

Jim and Mark...My deepest condolences. Your mom and I were classmates at Brush High School and at Ohio Wesleyan. She was one of the classiest people I knew. Her sense of humor was contagious and I well remember exchanging email jokes over the years. She will forever remain in my heart.

Jim and Mark - I am so sorry to hear of your mom's passing. I have such fond memories of her from my growing up years. She was a wonderful part of our family's life for a very long time. And, she made the very best clams casino! My thoughts and prayers are with you both.

Barb Merrill was one of the "class" of women who settled in Albion during its halcyon years. She was active in the community, her church, the family business, and with her family. She and her peers made it an idyllic place for many of us to spend our formative years in. Level and matter-of-fact, she had a wonderful influence on my life. I am certain she has left a lasting mark on everyone she ever came into contact with. She is in the Lyman Family's thoughts and prayers.

Barb was the epitome of an excellent school librarian. I had the pleasure of working with her at the Albion Middle School and was a big fan of hers. What a delightful woman!
