Barry Zimmerman Obituary

Barry Joseph Zimmerman passed away peacefully after a long illness on February 17, 2025. He was born November 23, 1942 to Victor and Ida Mae (DeKeyser) Zimmerman and raised in Ripon, Wisconsin. Barry leaves a loving family and a long and distinguished career as an educator and researcher.

Barry received his bachelor's degree and Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Arizona, before joining their faculty. In 1974, he accepted a position at the Department of Educational Psychology at the Graduate Center, City University of New York, where he was later appointed Distinguished Professor, and began a 36-year career conducting research and mentoring doctoral students. In a large scholarly output, he developed multiple pioneering models that profoundly influenced international research in the field of self-regulated learning (SRL) and have been applied to various disciplines including academics, sports, music and health. Barry was particularly interested in its applications to the academic achievement challenges faced by many underprepared high school and college students, providing approaches to help them develop the skills they need to achieve their goals. He also did influential research into the application of SRL to the challenges faced by student-athletes who want to improve their performance. He further applied his research to health issues, including a major project with Columbia University Medical School and Columbia Presbyterian Hospital to address the rapid rise in asthma among inner-city populations of children in New York City. This program helped children and their families to manage their health in ways that led to fewer medical emergencies. Barry also served on the board of the American Lung Association, helped to found the Behavioral Science Assembly of the American Thoracic Society and became a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the American Psychological Society and the American Educational Research Association.

Barry received many honors and awards, but he considered his greatest contribution to be his role in mentoring the next generation of educators through the many graduate students he advised through the years. "A brilliant man with no arrogance only kindness and patience" is how he was described by a former student.

Barry always enjoyed sports and was an avid tennis player, skier and photographer. He was also an accomplished trumpet player, a talent he continued to enjoy through his life. Barry remained close to his extended DeKeyser family and was a committed Green Bay Packers fan. His grandfather played on the 1920 Green Bay Packers team.

Barry was predeceased by his parents and his brother Stephen Zimmerman. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, the love of his life, Diana (Conley) Zimmerman, as well as his two daughters Shana Zimmerman and Kristin (Alex) Scott, his two grandchildren Katherine and Nicholas Scott, his nephew Sean Zimmerman and his niece Erin Hall.

A memorial mass and celebration of life will be held in the near future.

To the family, I am sorry for your loss. I was his student in the "olden days". He was excellent, and the information that I learned in his course informed my research for years after and has translated into impact regarding children, families, and schools. I admired his kindness, quiet demeanor, and humility. Be encouraged.

Dr. Barry Zimmerman was a brilliant professor. But, I knew him as a very caring individual not only of his wife Diana and his children and grandchildren but also of others. He always took the time to listen and offer his help whenever he could. He was a unique human being and will always be missed.

After years of doing counseling and working as a school psychologist and private psychologist, I still quote or reflect the wisdom of Barry Zimmerman in nearly all my sessions...his theories, his style, his approach and his calmness are with me every session. I value what he taught me, and his legacy lives on in all the people I´ve worked with at the school and everywhere else. It´s very funny because without even knowing it, my daughter`s name is Shana. Barry was a fabulous educator and a truly kind and gentle and warm individual. Thank you,Barry.

I had the very good fortune of knowing Barry over the past few decades. I began reading his work in the late 1970's and have followed it ever since. He research on self-regulation and self-regulated learning greatly influenced my development of the Self-Regulated Strategy Development model of instruction. Barry not only mentored his students, but often offered opportunities and support to early career scholars. I was lucky to meet him at conferences and be one of them. He invited me and Steve Graham to submit proposals or chapters for his edited books on self-regulation. This was a great honor and these papers always improved our own thinking and future work. I will never foget him, and will miss him always. He was kind, generous, and a model for scholarly behavior and commitment. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones. Many many happy memories help you through this difficult time.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, I was a colleague of Barry's at the CUNY/Graduate Center, where I was a junior faculty member. While our perspectives differed substantially, Barry was wonderfully kind and supportive to me, which I much appreciated. I'd lost contact with Barry after I moved to UCLA during those long ago years.

dr. Barry Zimmerman, I'd like to thank you for the abundance of wisdom you've brought into the world through your rigorous research and dedication to educational psychology. Your work helped me connect the many dots within the massive field of self-regulated learning. Your models helped me puzzle it all together and allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the research field altogether. Due to the highly practical value of your work, I can now support many schools on the other side of the world in empowering their teachers, students, and parents. I think it is safe to say 'thank you' in the name of all of them! May you rest in peace!

From the other side of the world, I came to know and admire Barry's work on self-regulated learning. His ideas provided the basis of much of my own work across the past 35 years as a university academic. I will always remember his generosity and his willingness to help researchers around the world and his dedication to extending a field of research that has had such an enormous impact on teaching internationally. Although I never met Barry, we collaborated on a couple of writing projects, and in our email exchanges, I realized that we both had learned trumpet during our school days. Thank you Barry for all you have done, and for the friendship you shared with me since our first publication together in 2002. May you rest in peace.
