Charles Benjamin "Ben" Doten

Charles Doten Obituary

DOTEN, Charles Benjamin "Ben", age 59, passed away Monday, August 16, 2010 at the Tucson VA hospital after a long battle with cancer. Charles, the eldest son of Edward and Eva Doten, was born and raised in Tucson, AZ. He joined the United States Marine Corp immediately after graduating high school and served with honor in the Viet Nam war. The pride of being a Marine was evident throughout his life. Having a natural gift for mathematics and engineering, he earned a B.S. in Mining Engineering from the University of Arizona. He pursued his engineering career throughout the western United States and visited various countries in Central and South America. Eventually, he returned to Tucson to finish his career. His character and charisma were self evident by the numerous friends from around the country that visited when they learned of his illness. He will be missed. He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy; three children, Christopher Doten, Jennifer Duran and Steven Doten and five grandchildren, Kendel, Kaitlyn, and Karlie Duran and Taylor and Piper Doten. He also leaves behind his father, Edward Doten, and two brothers, Richard "Joe" and Edward "George" Doten. Viewing and Services will be held Thursday, August 19, 2010 at the The Church of Latter-day Saints at 2002 N. Greasewood starting at 9:00 a.m. He will be laid to rest in a family plot at the LDS Cemetery at 4001 N. Alvernon in Tucson at 12:00 p.m. Arrangements by CARRILLO'S TUCSON MORTUARY, INC.

I, too, reread Ben's entries and think of Ben often with great fondness and admiration. He was one of the few that kept in touch from the USMC days. We had wonderful times together before he was old enough to legally buy a beer.

I was re-reading some of Ben's emails today. He was quite a patriot and a tremendous family man. Most of his letters were about his family or his country -- he was passionate about both. Rest in peace, Ben.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Ben's illness and subsequent passing, my condolences to Kathy and family. I first met Ben at U of A's School of Mines. As both of us were former Marines we quickly became friends - a bond that has lasted through the years. I will truly miss him, Semper Fi!

I was honored to first meet "CB" on the July 4th weekend in Washinton, DC, during the first (ever) reunion of the USMC Vietnam Tankers Association. He seemed to be a perpetual motion machine. His smile lit up the room and his wit was infectious. He will most definately be missed by many.

CB:God bless and keep you in the palm of His hand. We shall meet again in Heaven.

I am SO thankful for the opportunity to have reconnected with Ben in the past few years from the days when we were "pen pals" when he was in Nam. He was funny, fierce and intensely interested in the world around him.I enjoyed his emails, and finally meeting him and his terrific family in January, 40 years after his last letter! May his family be comforted by the memory of all that Ben accomplished and all that he was to them. God's blessings of grace and peace to all --

Rest well, Charlie. Guarding Heaven's gates will certainly be better than guarding OP 10's bunker line. Semper Fidelis, Marine.

Kathy, Chris, Jennifer and Stephen,
I have wondered about Ben since I was there back at the first of the year. I had lost track. I am so sorry, yet I know the suffering is over. A loss like Ben is never easy as friends like him are rare indeed. Peace and comfort to you.

"C.B" as we knew him in our organization, was one of the founding members of the USMC Vietnam Tankers Association. He put his computer science training to use by designing our web site. He will be missed by all of us who served with him or had the privilege of knowing him. Semper Fidelis! Jim Coan (Sierra Vista, AZ)
