Charles Kaplan Obituary

KAPLAN, Dr. Charles passed away on November 11, 2009 in La Jolla, California with his wife and daughter at his side. He was born on June 13, 1931 in Brooklyn, NY to Max and Rae Kaplan. He graduated from Lafayette High School and entered Brooklyn College where he pursued a pre-medical course of study where he received his Bachelor's degree and entered State University of New York - Downstate Medical Center and received a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1958. He married Rita Engelhard (the girl next-door) in 1957 and after completing an internship at Kings County Hospital, they moved to New Jersey where he completed his residency. Dr. Kaplan started a family practice in Somerville, N.J. and later moved his practice to the neighboring town of Raritan, N.J. In addition to his active family practice, he was Medical Director of the New Jersey Eastern Star Home for the Aged and was Director of School Physicians for the Somerville Board of Education and the Branchburg Township Board of Education. He also served as School Physician for the Bridgewater-Raritan Board of Education, was on the Board of Directors of the Somerset County Heart Association and was on the Medical Staff of The Somerset Hospital. Pain resulting from his injuries from an accident caused an early retirement from his practice in 1973. The family moved to Tucson that year and in 1994, he and Rita moved to Sun City Vistoso. He is survived by his wife, Rita; daughter, Linda of San Diego; sisters, Leonora Yanovich of Fort Lee, N.J. and Cynthia (Morris) Aroesty of Boynton Beach, FL and Lake Keuka, NY, and many nieces and nephews. It was Dr. Kaplan's wish that there be no Memorial Services for him.

Dear Rita, our hearts go out to you and your family. We feel blessed to have known Charles. We loved his silent competitive ways while playing bocce. And of course, it was a pleasure to hear his angelic voice in the choir at the SCV musicals. May your years of memories bring you peace and comfort.
