David Duncan Obituary

David J. "Dave" Duncan passed away peacefully on May 27, 2013. He was born in Seattle, WA, April 2, 1943. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Carol; children, Michael (Lea), Steven and Deanna; grandson, Tyler; sister, Joan Anderson (Elko, NV) and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He graduated from Beaverhead County High School in Dillon, MT and from Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology in Butte, MT. In 1967 David and Carol moved to Tucson, AZ, where David went to work for ASARCO Incorporated. He began his career in mining at the Mission Unit and a few years later was transferred to the Silver Bell Unit where he worked until he retired as General Manager in 2005. David leaves many legacies. Professionally, his crowning achievement was the SX-EW plant that he conceived of, and oversaw to completion. He recently joked that this project was going to outlast him. In 2005, David was awarded the Leadership Award in Mining Safety by the International Society of Mine Safety Professionals. Additionally, he truly valued the relationships he developed over the years with his colleagues. Personally, David enjoyed spending time with his family. In the early years the family vacations were centered on trips to Montana to visit grandparents and do a little fly-fishing. His children will attest that he never missed their school functions or weekend BMX races. Later on David and Carol enjoyed trips to San Diego where he loved to visit Point Loma. He had many hobbies which included astronomy, Wildcat basketball, Diamond Backs baseball and model trains. His biggest last endeavor was his infamous train room which was a perpetual work in progress and included "Tylerville" (named after his grandson.) Above all, David will be remembered as a very caring and thoughtful man. He will be greatly missed. A vigil service will be held at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Ave., Oro Valley, AZ, 85704, on Monday, June 17, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Odilia Catholic Church , 7570 N. Paseo Del Norte, Tucson, AZ, 85704, on Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. with a reception following. Interment will be at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in David's name to Immaculate Heart High School, Memorial Scholarship Fund, 625 E. Magee Rd., Tucson, AZ, 85704, or Casa de la Luz Foundation, 7740 N. Oracle Rd., Tucson, AZ, 85704.
