Don Sowell Obituary

Don Sowell passed away June 18, 2011. The son of Larry and Kathleen Sowell, Don married Teresa Murphy on March 15, 1990 on Maui and she survives. He was a proud third generation native Arizonan and a naturally gifted athlete who played Triple-A baseball for the San Francisco Giants. Following that experience of a lifetime he embraced his calling as a civil-structural engineer and spent his career managing very large, sophisticated design and construction programs and projects all over the country. Don worked 20 years with Stearns Rogers, served as Director of Facilities Design and Construction for the University of Arizona, and spent the last 10 years as Vice President of Heery International. Most recently, Don was energized in developing his newest venture, Magma Project Management. Don's greatest delight was his last 21 years laughing and enjoying life with his wife. He loved spending time on his boat, enjoyed his collection of bright red automobiles and cherished the good times he spent with his favorite friends and first cousins. Don will be greatly missed as he was loved by all for his generous spirit, giving heart, sage wisdom and love of life. Don is survived by his wife, brother Bob, sister Kay, and preceded in death by his parents. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at St. Philip's In The Hills. My condolences to the Sowell family on your loss. I worked for Don when he was at the U of A Facilities, Design and Construction back in the 90's. He was a wonderful person of integrity, and a great "upbeat" boss. I pray God's comfort during this time.

Dear Mrs. Sowell,

I had the great opportunity to work with Don on the Arizona School Facilities Board project about 10 years ago and to this day recall his professionalism, his integrity, his hard work and his dedication to his family, his job, and in our case to the State of Arizona. Don was a remarkably caring person who stayed in touch over the years even if just once a year at Christmas to say "hi". Everyone who knew Don will miss him as the world has lost one of its finest. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Dear Teresa, Bob and Kay,
We have only the fondest memories of Don. He was caring and supportive during Virgil's illness and always made him laugh during each visit. The family stories he shared with us after Virgil died made us laugh and did much to lift our spirits. As Don told Virgil,"...that laughter will remain in my thoughts of you always..."just as Don's laughter will remain in ours. We wish we had seen Don more, as his sincerity and love touched our hearts. May memories of your wonderful husband and brother get you through this painful time. Love, Audrey,Bryan and Paula
