Donald Saffer Obituary

Donald "Don" Saffer, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and cherished member of the Tucson community, passed away on December 27, 2024, at the age of 78. Born in Newark, New Jersey, Don moved with his family to Westchester, California, at the age of 11. It was in Westchester that his love for basketball began to flourish, setting the stage for a lifetime of achievement both on and off the court.

A talented athlete, Don's passion for basketball led him to play under the legendary coach John Wooden at UCLA during the 1960s. As a guard for the Bruins, Don was a key contributor to the team's remarkable legacy, helping them win national championships in 1967, 1968, and 1969. His time at UCLA was a defining chapter in his life, blending athletic achievement with lifelong lessons that shaped his character.

After graduating from UCLA, Don met the love of his life, Susan Rae Saffer, in Westwood. The two shared a relationship marked by love, laughter, and a deep bond that sustained them through decades of life together. Together, they created a vibrant and loving family, raising four children: Jonathan, Jeffrey (Amanda), Michael (Marci), and Danielle.

Don was preceded in death by his wife, Susan, in 2008, and his parents, Rudolph and Bernice Saffer. He is survived by his children, his ten grandchildren: Elizabeth, Emily, Samuel, Scott, Alexis, Paul, Rainey, Rudy, Susannah, and Solomon; as well as his loving sister, Shirley, and her husband, Joseph, whom Don considered a brother. The Saffer family was deeply involved in the Tucson Jewish community, and Don and Susan were long-time supporters of Temple Emanu-El.

Professionally, Don earned a Master's degree in Education from the University of Southern California (USC), which laid the foundation for his future in education. After moving with his family to Tucson in 1979, Don pursued various entrepreneurial ventures, including owning and operating a gym, a bar/nightclub, and frozen yogurt shops. Though these endeavors were successful, Don ultimately found his true calling in education. In the early 1990s, he became the headmaster of Fenster School, where he spent two decades shaping the lives of students and fostering a nurturing environment for academic and personal growth. Don's leadership at Fenster transformed the school into a beacon of individualized education, impacting countless young people and their families.

Outside of his professional and family life, Don had a zest for life and a talent for bringing people together. He always had a smile and a sincere interest in the lives and stories of both friends and strangers. For decades, he participated in a weekly poker group every Monday night, where he shared laughter, friendly competition, and camaraderie with close friends.

Friends and colleagues fondly recall Don's wisdom, warmth, and unwavering belief in helping others achieve their potential. His life was a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and the enduring bonds of family and friendship.

The family will share details of the memorial service once arrangements have been made. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Congregation Chaverim https://www.chaverim.net/ reflecting Don's lifelong dedication to education and community enrichment.

Don Saffer's legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched, both as an educator and a family man. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

I had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Saffer while attending Fenster. He was a good man and I remember him often. I really needed discipline and Don gladly helped in that regard. I had found myself in detention often, and in my Senior Year Mr. Saffer and I had negotiated a quid qou pro. I would not have to sit in the detention room, in exchange for manual labor. I graciously accepted :) Kind regards from the Grzymala's (Chris, Kayla, Camren, Christianna, and Morgan.)

Phil and I were so blessed to be neighbors and friends to Don and Sue and the family. They were so much fun to be around, and were so generous with their home and time and love. Don is with Sue again, and that makes me smile. We will miss them always. They made the world a better place.

Don Saffer was a remarkable man and a great friend to so many who had the opportunity to know him. We cherished his friendship and will forever remember him for his smile, his laughter, his great sense of humor and the special way that he befriended so many. He was always about others, not himself. To know Don was to love him and forever cherish his memory. Don loved his family dearly and every minute that he had to share with them. He genuinely enjoyed being a part of their lives and particularly seeing them accomplish their chosen goals in life. In this, and all things in life, he partnered with his wife, Sue to be a strength in the lives of those around them. Tragically, we all lost Sue far too early in life. Sue´s passing was mourned by all who knew her.

It is easy to remember Don was a world-class collegiate athlete in one of the most successful basketball programs to ever grace the hardwood of American basketball courts. One of Don´s great strengths was his remarkable sense of humility. An attribute that permeated how he led his life, and by example a gift he bestowed on others around him. While he had a great sense of pride in his athletic accomplishments, he never spoke of them unless asked. His true sense of being was not about himself but about his wife and children. In so many ways he personified the attributes we should all live in our lives. He will truly be missed by all who knew him, but we know he has joined Sue, his Mom and Dad and others who passed before him. He was a great man, a great father and a true friend. God bless you. You are missed. Rest in peace.

What a great guy Mr. Saffer was! I have nothing but fond memories of him at our baseball games when I played with John and Jeff when we were younger. Mr. Saffer was always so friendly and engaging and I always remember him being very upbeat and so positive. Always called people by name and was just a class act all the way around. He will be missed in the Tucson community for sure.
Wondering if John, Jeff, or Mikey ever beat him in an arm wrestling contest...I'm thinking not but I'll be asking when I see them. Love you Saffer family and I am sorry for your loss your Dad was a stud for sure and I will definitely never forget him.

Donnie was a wonderful human being. We met in 1964 at Ucla where we competed against one another. We were both on the Freshman basketball team but that didn´t prevent us from becoming friends off the court. He was an intense competitor, unbelievably quick, and just as fast. When we both moved up to the varsity, one year we were roommates whenever the team traveled. We shared many laughs together and that didn´t end after we graduated from Ucla. When Donnie was a gym owner, I did not know he owned the gym when I joined and could not believe my eyes when he came into the gym. Initially, I thought he was a member too because he was no longer the small framed basketball player. Instead, he had become a body builder and he was HUGE!!. We shared a good laugh because I hadn´t recognize him at first. I looked forward to seeing him whenever I worked out. Even after he moved to Arizona, we stayed in touch. I met his family and even interacted with his daughter, Danielle and his son, Mike.
To say that Donnie will be missed is an understatement. To meet Donnie was to love him. He was just a great great guy and I will miss seeing and talking to him. R.I.P. my friend.
